Dr Patricia Worby, PhD, Msc. HPD is a former scientist, researcher, and now specialist practitioner in chronic illness. A child of the 1970's from a 'normally dysfunctional' family, she found solace in study, being the first in her family to go to university where she studied biochemistry, the science of life. But life seemed strangely absent from the information she received and she felt strangely unmoved by the experience. After graduation she was going to 'change the world through science' but it proved not to be so; life then intervened in a quite unexpected way.
She worked for the NHS for a number of years in medical education, followed by a spell in clinical research and supporting multidisciplinary research at the University of Southampton. However, after a series of health challenges in her 30's, brought about, she now knows, by the unresolved grief of the death of her father when young, including depression and chronic fatigue, she was compelled to find her own answers and is now a passionate advocate and practitioner of natural medicine.
After being introduced to the healing power of such 'alternative' approaches (which she initially was very sceptical of), she decided to change direction. Initially studying Nutritional Medicine at Surrey University and then Advanced Clinical Massage (ACM) at the Jing Institute, Brighton, then decided to extend her knowledge with psychotherapy, specifically studying cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy and trauma release.
She is now a specialist using Hypnotherapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), Emotional Freedom Technique (EEFT) and her own brand of Havening (grounding through the body) which form a powerful armoury for treatment of anxiety, trauma, and chronic pain syndromes. In addition, she is a certified NLP Practitioner and Chrysalis Effect Wellbeing Coach specialising in Chronic Fatigue Syndromes such as ME and Fibromyalgia. She uses a multidisciplinary approach to health and healing which allows people to take responsibility for their health and is passionately committed to providing the research-based answers to why their health is so compromised and how they might heal. However, she is not afraid to stress the spiritual connection between the mind, body and consciousness and invokes this connection as often as possible. She calls this 'Mindbody medicine' and recognises it as the only way to move forward from the current medical model of pharmaceutical/ surgical intervention to a more energetic/ spiritual one fit for the 21st century.
She has written articles for local health magazines, writes a regular blog on health and wellbeing issues (healthwarrior), has co-authored an online health programme and contributed to a report to the NHS on 'ME, CFS and Fibromyalgia - Supporting Recovery for All' presented to The UK Government in February 2014. She has also presented numerous wellbeing seminars including 'Hidden Anxiety' and 'Ask the Experts' for the Chrysalis Effect (the UK's only online programme for CFS and Fibromyalgia).
She has published three books (the first is available free on her website www.alchemytherapies.co.uk), the second looks at the evidence of the effect of common occurrences of 'everyday trauma' and stress on the body. She has recently completed a PhD in medical/clinical hypnotherapy to investigate the links between life events and personality styles in creating chronic pain and fatigue.
She now devotes her time to her busy practice (www.Alchemytherapies.co.uk), writing and speaking. See her website patriciaworby.co.uk for full details of the full range of her interests.
