“The author does a very good job in engaging us with the cast of this tragedy that has been playing out for hundreds of years, and introduces us to the key elements of the history of the region that brings us to the present day conflict. Tribal dynamics, religious intolerance and foreign intervention all have their part to play. But at the end of the day it is those who have little say in the matter who are affected the most.” (Sally Cronin, Author & Blogger)

Not only does she depict the harsh realities of war, but the emotional turmoil and pain of the soldiers and the Afghan population innocently caught in the war. "It is Parade Day, a very special day to remember a very special Royal Navy South Atlantic Ordinary Seaman. The parade was in honor and in memory of Joyful Trouble, a kind dog and an Ordinary Seaman, a Great Dane with a purpose. Ana and her younger brother, Tommy, are excited about the parade, but more than anything they want to hear the story about Joyful Trouble because their grandfather, a great storyteller, had once been an Ordinary Seaman, and it had been his responsibility to look after and look out for this Great Dane. The dog had an affection towards men of the sea and had caught the Navy’s and the town’s attention on more than one occasion due to his wanderings and traveling the train along with the seamen.
Patricia Furstenberg’s young people’s short chapter book, Joyful Trouble, is an amusing and fascinating fable, a story telling the life of one Great Dane in his role as an Ordinary Seaman in the Second World War. The story unravels as the grandfather tells the story to his young grandchildren. It sparkles with good, old fashioned family time and family storytelling, treasured childhood moments that sadly get lost too often in this fast-paced world. The young reader will quickly warm up to the young children in the story as they learn about a very special Great Dane as well as a vital part of their grandfather’s past. This is a compassionate and heart-warming story" 5STARS - Reviewed by Emily-Jane Orford for Reader's Favorite
"When I started this book, I was ready to cry to my heart’s content, considering this book was based on a dog. I came across a sweet, humorous and fun read. This book is based on a true story of Able Seaman “Just Nuisance”, the only dog ever to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy. He served with HMS Afrikander, a Royal Navy naval base in Simon’s Town, South Africa, during the WWII.
Patricia has written a beautiful and oh so refreshing tale of friendship, loyalty, and love.
In the book, the story of “Joyful Trouble”, a mischievous but a very friendly and helpful Great Dane is narrated by a granddad to his 2 grandchildren, 9-year-old Anna and 5-year-old Tommy.
Trouble was a friend of the entire Simon’s town, especially the seamen. So much so that, he followed them everywhere, and even helped them.
"There is something truly magical about this wonderful collection. Having read each poem, I love how every word celebrates our canine companions from the tip of their wet noses to the wag of their tails." (Susan Day, Editor and Author)

Celebrating the simple things in life as seen through the eyes of our old time favorite furry friends, “As Good as Gold” is a volume of poetry revealing the talent and humor we always knew our dogs possessed.
Dogs are full of questions, yet they are famed sellers of innocence especially when it comes to explaining their mishaps and often foolish effervescence through such pondering as “Why IS a Cat Not Like a Dog”, “As Brown as Chocolate”, “Silver Stars and Puppy Tail” or, best yet, “Dog or Book?”
A book with an enormous heart for readers of all ages, it includes 35 poems and haiku accompanied by expressive portraits of our canine friends. The poems are grouped in: Questions, Colors, Musings and Haiku.

“Pete, the yellow toy elephant and his friend Murphy the Lizard are the two main characters in this book that young readers (and those having the pleasure to read the story to their children) will be delighted to meet. The text immediately grabs the reader's attention and flows effortlessly from one imagery to another, interspersed with adorable illustrations and a simple philosophy: there is beauty in our world that anyone can appreciate or that can be shared and enjoyed in the company of a good friend. I will make sure to recommend the book to other parents. “(Amazon Review)
“This book really shines when you read it to a child. There are plenty of sound effects and colourful descriptions to keep a child's attention. “(Amazon Review)
“This is a great book for children over a wide age range.
I particularly liked the way the author used her imagination to remind us of the important things in life, like jumping on crunchy autumn leaves and running through long grass.
This would make a great book for children starting out on chapter books.
The lesson of how important friendships are is invaluable and will be appreciated by parents and children alike.” (Amazon Review)

"I like the important underlying messages behind the story. It shows that friendship can happen despite being from two different races. The dog doesn’t give up on the lion. His faith and daily persistence in trying to cheer the lion up is rewarded with a lovely friendship. That is what friendship is about – supporting one another and being there despite the hurdles. Friends don’t give up." 5 Stars Whispering Stories Review for the English Edition

“So ‘n vriendskap, jy moet mal wees

So is Afrika se wilde vlaktes,
NEW, revised edition. Bright, engaging, childlike pictures.
Een het groot voete, die ander was korter;
Dit was pret om kos te deel, water en lag;
