I rarely read fiction, but in full disclosure, had recently met the author and felt I should read it. I was actually nervous, wondering how I would be honest with her if I didn't like it - but didn't end up having that problem as it was the complete opposite. I genuinely loved it and highly recommend it. I finished it within 24 hours as it captured me completely and I could not put it down (well, just briefly to do the regular things I had to do!).
What I loved most about this book was that the characters and concepts stayed in my head and infiltrated my life for quite some time afterwards. Though pitched to YA, I'm 41 and found it was the perfect "level" for me - an easy enough read so I didn't have to work too hard to understand what was going on, but challenging and intelligent enough to keep me interested. Beyond that it echoed many of my personal and spiritual interests and beliefs. Particularly as a mother of two girls, I also appreciated a strong lead female character. I also enjoyed the clever storyline, bringing together different times and locations neatly but not in a predictable way. Can't wait for the next two books in the series! I could absolutely see this as a TV series or movies and hope that happens in the not to distant future.
This was an exciting read. I read it really quickly and it kept me gripped all the way through. Although this is YA there are some very racy scenes. I thought this was great as Ella is in her very late teens and when you fall for someone at that age, sex is on your mind a lot!
The characters are well formed and there are a couple of subplots that I thought were really well written. The characters from these plots or backstories were actually my favourites; Dolly, Evie and Margaret.
The idea is a really great one but I don't want to give it away here. Let's just say I think this would make a great film, lots of adventure and plenty of surprises to keep you gripped. Well done Natali! Fantastic debut novel.
I am surprised that the majority of the reviews I have read don't mention how racy the book is! It really shocked me. I read a lot of YA fiction and while they often touch on the topic of sex, none have been like this. It's almost a bit 50 Shades at times! I can't help but feel a bit prudish and shocked that this level of description is aimed at Young Adults and am not entirely sure what age "young adult" is, but I certainly wouldn't want my daughter to read it at least til she's 17!
So all that being said, I have enjoyed reading the book and look forward to the next in the series.
Although I am no longer able to describe myself as a young adult, I am still an avid reader of YA fiction, and I have to say that this book is up there with my favourites in this genre. The characters draw you in from page one, and keep you hooked right through to the last page. The author manages to avoid all the usual YA cliches with style, and that makes this stand out from a lot of other books I have read. Without giving anything away, the end took my breathe away and left me desperate for the next instalment.
This book has been wonderfully written. The story is magical and I couldn’t put it down. The passion and feeling behind the characters and their relationships made me feel like I was watching the story unfold and getting to know the characters personally. I don’t normally write reviews, I just like to read others. But, I felt I had to leave a review as I couldn’t put this book down! The vision of the book, the creation of the characters, their story, utterly fabulous, emotional and captivating all at the same time. A must read.
I was sucked into The Path Keeper right from Chapter 1 and my love for the characters grew more and more as the book progressed. The author deals with some real world situations with a twist, making the story both relatable and realistic yet fantastical and gripping. It has everything a good YA needs without being too sickly, and the research the author has put into the story really adds another dimension to the fantasy aspect. There is a fair amount of cringe and a few editing mistakes, but I am not putting too much weight on that as I feel it is likely to be very much my fussy taste! Overall, I am looking forward to the next instalment. A great debut!
Having had a very hectic year I had got out of the habit of reading because my concentration was shot so I wasn’t sure I would be able to settle down long enough to get into a book but I needn’t have worried. I was gripped by the second page and not once did my attention wander. This book is wonderful... amazing, and describes the sort of world that I would love to inhabit. At one point I thought it was going to get predictable but, within a few pages the plot was turned on its head and plot twist followed plot twist until I feel my head was going to twist off. Where did Zac go and why ? What was Ella going to do now ? What were her parents going to do ? What about her step father ? I can't understand how anyone could have this in their head...it is original, beautiful and very well written...but above all it is what all books should be...a GREAT STORY !! I'm not sure if I have a favourite character just yet. I normally end up empathising with one particular person but the author has written the characters so well that I feel like I bonded with several of them. I like the way we think we know someone then learn more about them and understand them even better. I am not normally a fan of stories that go back and forth between times but this book is an exception, perhaps because the author managed somehow to make me care about the characters even though I only met them briefly. It mattered what happened to them…they were real. On a professional level this author is seriously talented. History, realism and mysticism effortlessly and seamlessly woven together. It is one of those books that just doesn't leave your head alone. I found myself wondering about the characters for days afterwards and I am absolutely desperate to read the next book. If the next two books are as good as this I think it would make a television series to rival the Twighlight Saga !
When I picked up this book, I wasn't sure what to expect. Having only read a handful of YA books in the past, I figured it would be a typical girl meets boy, they fall in love, an issue arises, they figure it out and live happily ever after. I was wrong. From the very first chapter, I knew there would be more to the story than this. As I kept reading, I found I could not put the book down. And just as I felt I was getting closer to some answers, the book took a new turn and completely threw me! This twist had me hooked and ended up being instrumental to the rest of the story. A real page turner, full of drama, suspense and an original plot. I would definitely recommend this book and cannot wait for the next in the series. A fantastic debut novel.
YA is rally not my go to book genre, but had heard really good things about this from a friend, so thought I’d give it a go. And I’m glad I did!
You immediately buy into the characters. I am definitely not a YA, but I found them to be very believable and very engaging.
Without giving away any spoilers, it is a story of young love, and the rollercoaster of high intensity emotions that ride alongside, as two worlds collide.
The story weaves between the past and the present, with a magical romance that combines to make it a lovely, easy to read, experience. I also enjoyed the way the story unravels to test things you take as given!
I gauge a good book on how late I stay up to read it, and whether it is one of those books that despite the clock telling you to go to sleep, you still want to read ‘just one more chapter’. I had several late nights with this one as you can’t help but want to know what happens next!
This is a YA novel that is a cut above others in the genre. The book has a really interesting and original premise and is superbly executed by the author. I was deeply invested in both characters from the beginning, the scene setting is wonderful and i was gripped to the very last page and am desperate for the sequel. The is fantastic stuff.
