This is probably the most boring book I have ever read, I would advise anyone to stay well clear of DB Martin.
One star because it was free.

Debrah Martin is fast becoming one of my favourite authors and this was actually the first book written by her that I read and I enjoyed it hugely. The title accurately describes the main character Lawrence Juste - he begins the story as a tightly stitched man - everything under control , on the cusp of reaching the top of his profession, his past neatly tucked away, when, the day after the death of his wife he opens an envelope with a list of names and places, which brings his past firmly into his present, suffocating him like a tidal wave and the steady unraveling begins.

The intricacy of the unwinding of the tale had me absolutely gripped and could not put this book down – I remember toward the end as it dawned on me that things were not going to be resolved before the end of the book and I’d have to wait for the next installment – agony! The book has passion, anguish, fear, cunning - a storm of emotions to batter you around as they do Lawrence Juste – and at some points you feel just as wrung out as he does. It was a book I really had to concentrate on so as not to lose a grip on the many threads that hold it all together and I loved it. Quite simply I cannot recommend it enough – my best book of the year!

This is the first in a trilogy of mystery books by D B Martin following the lawyer Lawrence Juste. He appears to have the world at his feet until his wife is killed in a hit and run accident....it's seems a straightforward accident but this is just the beginning of Lawrence's discovery of his wife's activities.

The story was suspenseful with so many relationships that were interrelated into many areas of his life and childhood. The author has written a captivating mystery that has many parts to it. Ms. Martin creates a mystery so full of suspense with woven webs of twists and turns you really have to pay attention to keep up with events unfolding. The author takes us through many flashbacks of the character's lives within the story, which enables the reader to understand Lawrence's reaction and behaviours to many situations. Just as we learn more of the characters, the mystery deepens and the story becomes more suspenseful. The author seems to have the uncanny ability to keep you in suspense until she is ready to let you know what is really going on. She has characters that the reader can relate to. I was just sorry when it ended and I really want to know how things are resolved!!

Patchwork Man is the first novel in a trilogy focusing on the life of barrister Lawrence Juste, a former children's home resident who seized chances when they came, managing to rise above his early life and create an exceptional legal career. That career is now threatened by the uncovering of his past misdemeanours. This is a compelling story with an intricately convoluted plot that requires concentration on the part of the reader. I did often find myself baffled as the plot rushed past without my having grasped an important point earlier on! I think I had got it sussed by the end though - or by the end cover anyway. Lots of threads are left open, presumably to be picked up in the other two books.

I liked Martin's imagining of the young poverty-stricken family in Croydon and, as someone who lived near Eastbourne for a number of years, I can certainly attest to that bitter coastal wind she describes. Once we got to the present-day legal proceedings however, I was often distracted by unrealistic scenarios and wearied by the number of times we were told how 'personal' every action was. So intensely personal it turned out that I am amazed our Lawrence was legally allowed to pursue the case (and the case worker!) at all. Conflict of interest anyone? This was a shame because I was therefore too frequently left doubting what I read even though I enjoyed Martin's writing style and the challenge of unravelling the multiple mysteries. On that basis I would certainly try another of her books in the future, albeit not from this trilogy.

Probably at the top of my list as one of the most compelling reads I've recently discovered. A truly gripping psychological twisting tale of one man's journey to cover up his less than exemplary start in life, and what happens as all the threads so intricately woven begin to pull apart.

A realistic look at society's forgotten, sidelined members, flaws and all. A fascinating look at how one man, Lawrence Juste, manoeuvred his way up, through and past, the ranks of his peers.

Great collection of characters, plenty of intrigue and some startling surprises by way of some very unusual twists.

As I turned the last page I had a mini panic attack as I wasn't quite ready to relinquish my hold on either the characters or their stories. Thankfully, despite this book not ending on a cliffhanger, I'll be able to continue the journey as this is the first of a trilogy. I've downloaded the next two and am all set to enjoy myself back in the intriguing world of Lawrence Juste.

Note: I was asked to read and review this book by the author. Thankfully I did so!
