About the Author

Jane is qualified to the equivalent of a Masters Degree in People Management and is fascinated by the things which craft people’s personalities, so she has great fun exploring these through characters. She lives in the United Kingdom near the Regency City of Bath and has just bought her 400 year old dream home. History has always tempted her imagination and she loves researching and also exploring ruins and houses to get ideas. She equally loves a love story.
Jane has always aspired to writing a historical novel so when she was thirty she put it on her ‘to do before I am forty’ list. She completed her first novel ten years ago, never sent it anywhere then started the next. She’s not stopped writing since, and escaping into a mental world of fiction is a great painkiller to help fight off her Ankylosing Spondylitis.

The Passionate Love of a Rake, Jane Lark.
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews
So having read the first book in Jane's historical series and loved it I was keen to read this story about older brother Robert.
In much the same way as Ellen from the first book, Jane was also stuck in a lifestyle she didn't want and couldn't escape. Her elderly husband has died and left her his fortune, but his estranged son isn't happy – he's got the estates and lots of property but he wants the money too. He's a terrifying man and threatens Jane, telling her he always gets what he wants, and this time its not just the money but Jane herself. He's got a wife and eight children, but plans to make Jane his mistress. Her marriage to his father was unhappy, she was forced into it by her parents at just sixteen and Sutton used her as a show-piece, something to display to friends, and show off his control and domination of her. Trying to escape Joshua she flees to an old friend who's living in London.
There's she meets childhood friend Robert one evening at a function. He thinks she left him for money, that their relationship meant nothing to her, and he's spent the intervening years strengthening his reputation as the most notorious rake in Society. Once he sees Jane though all his old feelings for her come back, and he realises they never really left. He still sees her as a money grabber though, but through a series of events they take up a friendship, with him constantly trying for more. He's under the assumption that she must have had affairs in the past, so why not with him, but she stands firm – ish...:) After all he's a smooth tongued, handsome man, and once was so much more to her. She keeps seeing the old Robert, and not the one in front of her.

THE PASSIONATE LOVE OF A RAKE by Jane Lark is a pleasant Regency romance that revolves around the two main characters, Jane Grey, the young Dowager Duchess of Sutton, and Robert Marlow, the Earl of Barrington.

The story begins by setting the scene for us regarding Jane's current situation. Her older and unlamented husband, the Duke of Sutton, has died and left her his fortune. This would seem like a favorable occurrence but we discover that Jane has gained a bitter and ruthless enemy in the form of her late husband's son, Joshua, who feels that she has robbed him of his inheritance. Jane had a miserable, downtrodden marriage and it appears that her fate is still one of misery and persecution at the hands of her husband's son, who is now a very powerful man. However, she has one trustworthy friend called Violet, with whom who she finds safe haven, and this allows her to socialize again, though in a rather limited way. It is at a society ball that she bumps into her long lost love, Robert.

Robert has gained a reputation as a callous womanizer but we learn that his rakish ways are attributable to the frustrated and undying love he still carries for Jane. He finds that he cannot fight the still strong attraction he feels for her when he meets her again. Despite his reputation, Jane also cannot forget the boy she loved and grew up with and yearns to see if that charming youth still exists behind the hardened facade of the notorious rake. Jane, however, is inhibited by the threat of Joshua hanging over her and there is also tension between her and Robert regarding the past circumstances of her marriage.

Robert is quite an attractive character and I liked the idea that he had become embittered and cynical after he lost Jane.

'The Passionate Love of a Rake' overflows with sensuous Regency romance. The second in the Marlowe Intrigues this is definitely my favourite so far.

Robert the elder brother of Edward who we met in 'The Illicit Love of a Courtesan: HarperImpulse Historical Romance' is the passionate rake. A dark, brooding man full of mystery is gradually unravelled by Jane the Dowager Duchess of Sutton, his first love.

This story oozes romance and heartbreak.

Jane's story reveals the exploitation of women in Regency society. Finally free of her cruel, aged husband she finds his son determined to extract the fortune his father left her by whatever means he can.

The depth of the depravity Jane experienced combined with what she sees as Robert's abandonment of her when she needed him most ensures the story is rife with emotional conflict.

Robert's perceptions change as the story develops and he realises why Jane rejects him even if her body cannot.

The story is effortless to read, pure escapism with plenty of excellent supporting characters to hold your interest aside from the passionate romance between Jane and Robert.

The political nature of the society during this time is well described as is the indiscriminate censure it dealt out to those out of favour.

If you are looking for something to warm the winter evenings 'The Passionate Love of a Rake' is perfect.

I received a copy this book from Harper Collins HarperImpulse via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
