The book is worth reading but the author continues to repeat lines throughout the book that does start to become a bit annoying, there is continuing bracketing of abbreviations, once should be enough.
It is also stated that Minh died but there is no mention to how this happened or to how his wife found living in America, these simply left you wondering and could easily have been added in a Summary

I enjoyed this book for several reasons, It was at first the usual young grunt humping the Bush scared for his life and those of his buddies and then it continues to easy street for the rest of his tour. The next half details his return to Vietnam as a private contractor, all put together in short easy to pick up and put down paragraphs.

An excellent and wide-ranging account. I had been missing this titled it off my mental "to read" list, as I found the title odd and offputting, thinking it was going to be some kind of glorification/floating over of the reality of war. Eventually, however, I ran out of things to read and decided to give it a go. How glass I am that I did! Highly recommended.

I found this book by sheer chance, what a read and what a character. Having served in different areas in the world myself I was struck by the similarities but the story here is on a totally different level. I wish I could meet or correspond with the author and thank him for having this courage and strength to tell this story.

This is really worth a read. From a slightly different perspective than a lot of other Vietnam writings, the story is of a really ordinary guy surviving extraordinary experiences, learning his way and playing his part. After he completes his service, h stays on in the country working for civilian contractors, which gives him another view of the whole scenario and again is a perspective we don't often read about.

Proof reading could have been better, one or two anecdotes repeat, but not enough to spoil the read.

Its not that this is not a bad read, more than likely similar to many other books about Vietnam from a young US soldiers point of view. I am certainly not questioning what the author wrote was not true, but I did find it quite strange how any one can remember what and where they had their dinner every day from all those years ago. I can hardly remember what I had to eat 3 days ago never mind 40 years ago.

If you like Vietnam War Biographies then get this book. The author gives you plenty of detail and really tells his story well. I've read well over one hundred Vietnam Bio's and this is in my top 5.

An excellent read from someone who was actually there. I have read a few books about the war in Vietnam and never realised how badly discipline had broken down.
