Past events and a striking, unsettling place haunt this narrative on many levels. The presence of these and other hauntings engage the reader throughout.
There is a deep understanding of the complexities of relationships here, and an acknowledgment that not all fracture lines are reparable; yet, sometimes, small miracles happen.
The penultimate chapter is so surprising and accomplished that I had to return to it as soon as I'd finished the book.
This is an intelligent and rewarding debut novel. I can't wait for the next one.

This was a touching story of what could have been true life for a set of middle age women in an English town. The friendships that are made and lost in our teens, taken forward 20 years work so well. The narrative sweeps you in, and you are left feeling bereft at the end of the book wondering how the lives of these friends will continue.

Of particular note is the description of the lace on the wedding dress, and the analogy to life - with the holes being what makes the lace so wonderful(OK, total misquote there, but you'll get it when you read it)

More, more, more from this talented debut novellist please.

Although I guessed the links between the characters in the story, it did not detract from my enjoyment of the book at all. Fully-fleshed characters whom you feel you've known yourself, living lives with the same confusion and doubt experienced by mostly everyone. It is the very excellent depiction of these people and their lives which makes for such enjoyable reading. I hope Rachel Crowther writes further novels. If she does, I look forward very much to reading them. Highly recommended.

I downloaded a Sample and bought the book on the strength of the first chapter. Unfortunately it seemed to lose its way with the introduction of a host of extra characters and sub-plots only tenuously related.

This is one of the best contemporary novels I have read for many years. The story focuses on two friends - Olivia and Eve - and the relationship between them over the many years of their (troubled) relationship. Many other characters in the novel benefit from the same level of sensitive and subtle characterisation, which gives the novel its depth. An extraordinary event in Olive and Eve's shared past of becomes the historical and figurative reference point for the very familiar, and ordinary, problems and sensitivities of close friendships. I loved this book - it was extremely well written, and very touching.

By the end of the very fist page, the reader is totally reassured that this debut author - Rachel Crowther, can write! And write beautifully! ( A talent not to be taken for granted). I was totally absorbed by The Partridge and the Pelican. I could relate to the era, the characters, their life styles, their struggles and the totally unexpected moments - some wonderful, and many shocking that bringing up a large family entails. Let's hope we don't have to wait too long before her next book. Bravo!

I don't know who edited this book, but it would have been helpful if they had advised the author of the disjointed, boring, unrelated chapters telling a not very impressive story. I finished the book thinking I had wasted my time reading it.
