First the good:
Much improved performance between generations - it climbs and flies much faster than the original Bebop (OBB) making it useful for more applications where it previously would have been too slow.
Battery life is up there with the best consumer drones at 20-25 mins which should be enough time and range for typical scenarios.
It's around 25% bigger than OBB but you get a lot of extra performance for a small impact on portability whilst it's still small compared to the DJI Phantoms, meaning you can put it in backpack whereas other drones need a 'look at me everyone' attache case.
The new BB2 colour scheme design looks seriously impressive and reminds me of the DJI Inspire 1. The OBB looks like a kid's toy.
Overall build quality is much higher. The H or X is more aerodynamic and much stronger so I think crash costs will be cheaper with this version.
New battery loading mechanism is light years ahead of the embarrassment of the OBB.
GPS performance, which was awful with the OBB is absolutely rock solid now and gets quicker and better aquisition so you're less likely to have drone incidents.
The camera can now face straight down instead of mostly down and slightly ahead with OBB.
Switches on and off faster than the original.
The rear flashing light is extremely useful as it is so easy to lose the drone or orientation even at fairly close distances. A front light is also needed.
Handles wind well.
Flight Plan, the automonous control part of the app for the drone limits the BB2 to the same speed as the OBB. Why?
Descend speeds are painfully slow - this pain is exacerbated when you see its fantastic rates of ascent and can therefore not be justified.
High video pixelisation whilst travelling at very high/low rates of pitch as the software cannot find enough of the image coming through the lens.
They claim to have upgraded the lens to grab more light but I cannot see anything that can't have been done with the OBB contrast and brightness adjustments from inside the app.
The performance of the bottom proximity sense doesn't seem to be satisfactory - the drone can 'bounce' up and down across the ground.
The need to make self tightening propellors like DJI do that don't require using a tool you have to carry around with you.
UK pricing is higher than the US and Continental Europe.
If any of the Bebops have a collision then all the blades cut out - although this sounds good for safety, if you are at 300 ft and you hit a bird over water, your drone will be gone forever lost when it would probably could have recovered from a minor collision - they need to make this intelligent so it only works at low altitudes or can be disabled in the app.
My unit was returned as the stabilisation was faulty and I had cycles of high vibration on the horizontal axis and smoother video.
The bodywork above the GPS is so fragile that it flexes under the pressure of one finger and I cannot see it surviving for too long.
No new features whatsoever when compared to OBB; no follow me, no headless mode for newbies and no obstacle avoidance abilities.
Would like the ability to disable FPV stream to save battery as it is useless when using flight plan as the drone spends most of it's time out of range anyway and that battery would be better used extending flight time.
Lens still feels extremely exposed and prone to damage and the cover is held on by an elastic band which is too low tech for this price bracket.
They did a great job revisiting everything on the drone except for the thing that really matters to everyone, the camera. It makes no sense to ignore the most important component or pay it lipservice with some extremely minor improvements which do not result in real performance gains vs OBB. They didn't have to jump to 4K but going to 1440p would have been a sensible compromise.
A decend value and highly portable drone which is still fun to fly and with decent video most of the time which is a bit held back by the software. Go for the OBB if portability is more important plus the lower entry price. Go for or upgrade from the original if the range or speed of OBB hold you back from framing certain subjects as the video quality is essentially the same. Option three is wait until BB3 is released in Q4 2016.
I put it down to 3 stars because I find the video quality to be slightly worse than the original Bebop because they added a denoise filter which improves low light video but makes everything else look quite mushy.
I'm putting it back up to 4 stars because it is a lot of fun to fly.
On its second flight the drone lost connection to the phone when it was well within range and with a near full battery life. Instead of coming back to the location of the phone as it had done previously and as it is designed to do, it FLEW AWAY!!! The drone flew away. We looked up it last point of origin and went to the location. The drone was no where to be seen. We looked for hours around the surrounding area until it started to get dark. The drone was simply lost.
100% would NOT recommend this drone. Hundreds of pounds wasted. VERY UNHAPPY WITH THIS PRODUCT. It failed to do what it was designed to do, was overly complicated to set up and while good and fun to use once up and running, it failed and is now lost forever. Do not buy this product.
Takes a couple of tries to get the hang of controlling the drone.
Mildly clipped a tree and propellers did not break which is good and controls are a bit sensitive at 1st but can be changed for personal preference and the footage is easy to remove from the drone when transferring data.
