The box it comes in is quite nice too, with the golden outer wrapper and the ends of the main box decorated with a nice inset.
However, the pen itself is quite frustrating. Once you've got the ink flowing, it writes nicely, but it can take a bit to get it going. It seems to dry out very easily (even within 30 seconds of stopping writing) and doesn't seem to start again very easily. The old 'school' tricks of sucking on the nib, or squeezing the qink cartridge doesn't seem to help much. The best way of restarting seems to be dipping the nib in some clean water then blotting some of the water off, but this can affect the ink - different shades or flow levels. I bought some official qink cartridges with the pen so its not like I'm using some terrible third-party ink.
The other problem I've found is this isn't so good as an occasional pen. I bought this principally to write cards and the occasional letter. Therefore, it only comes out once a month or so. However, I've found the ink 'disappears' between uses. Start with a full cartridge, write some best wishes on a card, put it away again, then the next time there is no ink in the cartridge. Its not leaking out anywhere, so I can only assume either the cap has some kind of soak or the fluid in the ink evaporates when not being used.
Finally, I remember Parker Pens having a smooth nib. This is much more scratchy than I remember from the last time I had a Parker Pen in the 90s which I recall having a bigger 'ball' on the end of the nib. Its not rough, and far better than those cheap fountain pens of old, but something to be aware of.
In conclusion, it looks and feels lovely, but can be a bit frustrating to put pen to paper. I think the issues are more related to the ink than the pen itself, so I may try some third party inks at the next refill.
The pen looks pretty OK and although the gold wears off after a few months, it still retains a good look in my opinion.
This is my first fountain pen, and I bought two right off the bat, reading of so many positive experiences.
First days with it were amazing, I was born left handed so I had never had the pleasure of writing with a fountain pen. For various reasons I started writing with my right hand a few years back and nowadays I mostly write with it, so that I do other stuff with my 'dominant' one.
So I had never experienced before the smoothness a fountain pen offers when writing, a real pleasure.
I was however really disappointed when, maybe after a weekend where I didn't use the pen, I had difficulties getting the ink to flow.
But that's the least: after a few cartridges, the pen started 'getting stuck' while writing: this is the opposite of the good feeling of smooth flow -- it really disrupts your writing let alone making it look awful.
At first I thought it lied with me, maybe I didn't clean it properly, and to be honest the pen fell me once when it didn't have the cap fitted. I couldn't spot any bending or damage of the nib, however I thought that maybe this, plus some less than perfect cleaning, would have caused those issues.
So I reverted to my second - brand new - item: this time I clean it thoroughly before each cartridge change and it never fell me or anything.
Despite all my caring attention, the pen still gets stuck while writing, at times, and I can't describe how annoying this is.
So now I'm hooked to fountain pens and I have to find an alternative :)
Now, on the other hand, I couldn't find similar experiences with this model, here in the reviews, and the 'stuckness' does not happen each and every time, so it's not a complete disaster, but I would definitely expect such an item not to fail you *ever*, unless when its part worn off and you have to change it.
The pen came in a Parker box and was secured with a piece of elastic. Under the box was the Parker leaflet and a black cartridge. Look carefully for the cartridge because it is quite concealed in a fold in the packaging.
This is a nice weighty pen, not flimsy or lightweight.
The nib produces a very smooth flow across the page. I would always use genuine Parker ink cartridges to compliment the pen and I know I would be getting quality.
Parker have been making pens for years and I always trust them to produce a product that will last for years. The only reason I bought this is because I lost my last one and I was gutted that they don't make my lost pen any more. I like a heavy pen and I ordered this one as it definitely seems like a man's pen!
This gun metal pen looks great and writes smoothly.
I am delighted with it.
