(I have also used Simple Green in this device and it works just as well as the Park Tool solution, and far more economical). Watch a YouTube video before using the tool, and you'll be equally pleased with the results. After using the tool, wipe down the chain, re-apply some quality chain oil, wipe down the chain again, and you're good to go!
This is the first chain cleaning system I've used and I am impressed! The first step is to use the brush that's supplied with the kit to clean loose dirt and debris from the sprockets (don't forget to put newspaper under the bike before you do this). The curved teeth on the handle of the brush does a great job removing gunk between the sprockets.
Then, you shift the rear derailleur to the smallest sprocket and clip the scrubber to the bottom chain. Next, add cleaning fluid to the chamber, up to the line, and run the crank backwards 30 rotations while holding the scrubber with the other hand. While you're doing this, you can see and feel the 4 brushes scrubbing the top, bottom and sides of the chain. The scrubber contains all of the cleaning spatter. In no time flat, the chain is *sparkly*. The instructions say to empty the chamber, rinse it and repeat the cleaning. Possibly over the top, but the chain is even more *sparkly* afterward.
Dry the chain, apply your lube of choice (I use Finish Line Ceramic WET Bicycle Chain Lube, 4-Ounce Drip Squeeze Bottle), and you're done. It's very fast, and your hands stay pretty clean.
The 8 oz of cleaner that comes with the kit will only fill the scrubber 3 times, so that's what, 1 1/2 cleanings? The instructions say you can use dish washing liquid and water as a cleaner, but I haven't tried that.
Pro: simple, fast, neat way to clean your chain prior to lubrication.
Con: not much cleaner supplied with the kit
Gets your chain really clean, much better than you can do with a rag in my personal experience.
Bristle attachment is a start for cleaning cogs and getting little bits of gunk out.
Magnet catches a lot of grime.
The degreaser provided won't get you very far.
Bristle attachment is a bit too wide to fit for my Shimano 105 set. I can fit it in but its hard to move it to clean the gunk out.
You still need to use at least a few paper towels to catch the grease that flies out.
The handle doesn't stay as secure as I'd like, and based on how it mounts it frequently dislodges when you place the tool on the ground.
The biggest one: Because it only has the sponge on one side, it basically requires you to do the cleaning with the bike right-side up or on a stand. If you move the chain towards the sponge with the bike upside down, the derailleur will move around and make you flail around quite a bit.
If it had a sponge on the other side, I could do it upside down (like most people I know do who don't have money or space for a professional stand) without getting grease everywhere.
Worth it, and I rate it 4 because I think it is nicer than some of the alternatives that don't have a handle at all or don't have a magnet, but could be better.
