Product Description

Product Description

Alison Balsom brings her glamour, poise and virtuosity to concept album Paris, a selection of music written in and inspired by the most romantic city in the world. "The Parisian concept developed organically the more I looked for music that I loved, that could work in this sound world," explained Balsom.

Tracks on the album vary from 20th-century French composers (Satie, Ravel, Messiaen) to jazz (Django Reinhardt) and popular chanson française (Joseph Kosma), in enchanting arrangements for trumpet.

I think this recording of the trumpet is really lovely and enormously atmospheric. The orchestral arrangements by Guy Barker and Alison Balsom are very special indeed and very evocative of a late night Parisian bistro! I especially enjoy the juxtaposition of the pieces by Ravel, Messiaen and Satie with the more popular pieces by Piazolla, Joseph Kosma ( Autumn Leaves) and Django Reinhardt. A fine recording of very nostalgic and melancholy mood music!

I actually bought this at her concert, 'The Trumpet Sings' in Nottingham and got it signed. It's by far my favourite album of hers and she plays so beautifully! I have played the Cornet (a baby trumpet) for 9 years and have listened to Alison ever since, it's great to know that there are famous female trumpet players out there! Congrats on another great album Alison and keep on playing <3

A lovely collection of numbers that allows her warm tone to shine through. Avoids the mistake of trying to play jazz, just some gentle relaxed sounds (if occasionally teetering towards lounge music). Credit to her for giving something else a go. Frankly a better vehicle for her playing than the concerto I heard her play at the proms recently.

Well, it's OK, but it doesn't make you cry or make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Balsom chooses some nice rep, and the Guy Barker orchestra and others accompany her well.

There are some nice touches. The Piazolla pieces are beautifully arranged, but the recording sounds "over produced" to me. There is some remarkable virtuosity on show, but as a trumpet player you can't help but wonder how many takes it took for her to nail it, or whether chunks of it are spliced together by the producer). The slow stuff is nice but doesn't grab you like Chris Botti does. The Autumn Leaves track is played exactly how Eva Cassidy would play the trumpet - Balsom doesn't offer anything new to this beautiful song.

As a friend said to me yesterday, this is "Like all other Balsom albums. You listen to it twice and put it in the cupboard, never to be heard again".

This is a second attempt by a classical trumpet player at a crossover album (I refer to Hakan Hardenberger's "Both Sides Now" album from earlier this year). Both of which have some truly classy trumpet playing, but the performances lack, well as the Parisians would say, a certain "Je ne sais quoi".

I admire Alison Balsam's talent, and I have always enjoyed listening to her, so when my husband wanted to buy this CD, I was looking forward to hearing it. Unfortunately, we are both disappointed by this selection, we find it dreary - there is not a single cheerful tune. It will be going to a charity shop in the New Year, which is a great shame, as her playing is as accomplished as usual.

Alison plays the Trumpet with so much feeling, not an easy thing to do. I bought 2 copies of this album. One for me and one for my sister-in-law in Australia. Her husband, who was my brother died in July. He played the trumpet all his life so I hope she enjoys this album.

Pure trumpet tones, considerable breath control combined with late night tunes make for an easy listen or indeed an attentive one.
