This book seamlessly glides through every possible topic imaginable from change, loss and legalities, to do's and don'ts and common problems. She has divided the book into four sections with each of the sections carrying the answers to all of the questions a parent will consider through this guilt-ridden period of change.
She begins by introducing us to `the relationship between stress and parenting', a wonderful introduction to allow us to see how our behaviours and responses can have a lasting and detrimental impact upon our offspring and us. At this point I began to wonder if McGhee had undertaken some clinical training but then I learnt of her coaching skills! And what a coach she must be! Feelings, behaviours, emotions and managing change are interwoven with clear-cut, practical management.
To me, this book is more than a guide. It is a MUST READ for all parents contemplating separation and divorce. For those of you already divorced it will help you to continue to sail the `sometimes' stormy seas of separation.
Well-done Christina! Your work will support millions to deal with parenting apart. You describe your book as "a practical and empowering guide to raising happy and secure children after divorce or separation" to me it's even more!
Christina acknowledges at the outset that it's not easy parenting apart but goes on to give practical advice that takes into account the age of the children and relationship between the parents (from very acrimonious to non-existent!). She's very frank - "Do you love your children more than you hate your ex?". She has a real insight into how hard it can be and most importantly is full of really sensible suggestions without being patronising.
She includes practical examples that any parent can relate to and compares the effect different approaches will have on children depending on their age.
Her advice should enable separated parents to appreciate that arguing about principles (whether through courts or otherwise) eg shared care isn't necessarily going to benefit the children. What is important is that children have two homes in which they are happy and relaxed and do not spend what should be the best years of their life feeling confused by pressure and arguments between the two most important people in their lives.
There's a lot to take in but it's a book to stay on the shelf and be dipped into as your children get older and your own or ex's circumstances change, be it a geographical move or introduction of a new partner.
Whether you are about to separate or have lived apart for years this book is full of tips that will enable and empower. Congratulations Christina on a book that will really improve childhoods.
The book gave me straightforward practical advice which I followed and helped me to help my children. Invaluable.
