blown away

I decided to watch this movie because I saw a video of it winning a Palme d'Or award, I wasn't expecting too much just a normal movie that's all. However I was amazed by the stunning cinematography, I would say it's one of the best camera work I've ever seen. To go along with that the plot was very intriguing, I didn't feel bored the slightest through out the movie, as it had many plot twists that I wasn't expecting. I can clearly see why this move has won many awards, I would say that this movie is like a work of art. I would 100% recommend watching this masterpiece as you won't be disappointed at all.

Libby's review is very culturally inept, with absolutely no understanding of culture outside her own. This movie is a cinematic masterpeice that sheds light on serious classist issues and the clear problems existing in both poor and high classes. The movie contains unbelievably impressive metaphors that simply make this one of the best movies I have ever seen.

Really Gripping

I don't really have any words to describe what I have just watched, and specifically what it made me feel. I will summarise quickly as best I can. Firstly the director's work is profound, to be able to convey so accurately the atmosphere of a location or surrounding to make the viewer feel as though they are there. The viewer has no choice but to place themselves in the given environment and imagine how they could cope. I made sure not to read or watch any reviews of the film until I watched it, to allow myself to authentically take from it what I can.
For me, I was constantly wondering who really is the Parasite, who is the villain here? and the film does a brilliant job of pulling you back and forth. I constantly questioned the motives of all the characters and was constantly reminded that each cannot help how they behave no matter how drastic it may seem, as they are the product of their environment. Another thing that really impressed me was the sense of impending doom, it hung around a bit in the beginning but the audience would be made to forget it occasionally. Until around the halfway mark when it hung in there pretty thick. I knew something was going to go wrong I just didn't know what it was. Again the audience is thrown back and forth regarding, who could be the catalyst of it all. There is so much more I know I am still processing and cannot put into words. To those wondering why people are looking so deep into the film, I will give my rebuttal.
The topic of social class(the key topic in this film) and how it affects lives has been very prevalent in some people's upbringing. In some countries, you cannot escape the stigma that comes with something as trivial as your address. What you see in the film is reality for some people, having to lie about where they live in order to get jobs. People are offered jobs and are promoted because of their address, and all this for the benefits that come with association and often raising the social class of the company. In some countries unfortunately this is word for word how things operate. I would actually say that this is also prevalent in certain circles even in the UK. I think some people may avoid looking deep into the film because it rings familiar to them in one way or another thus causes discomfort. For people who may have been or are currently either in the position of the Kim family or the well to do family, this film could be a tad too close to home.

The film is intriguing, gripping, and other words I currently cannot sum up yet. After watching it I see why there was such a frenzy about it. Everything in the film kind of sits with you and stays for a while. It came as no surprise though as Bong Joon Ho is truly a phenomenal director. Watch this film when you can and avoid reading or watching any reviews about it.

That's it. If you get caught up in the plot holes, you have very little humanity.

Bringing back classic story telling
Verified purchase
We put off watching this movie for a very long time as we'd never watched the trailer. Today we decided to give it a go and I'm so annoyed for not watching it sooner.

For me it brings back simple but effective story telling. To be critical, a little suspension of belief is needed but I feel that the story is well worth it. If you enjoyed the original "Old Boy" I think you'll enjoy this, though not for the same gravity of plot twist. It's suspenseful and plays with levels of metaphorical ideals of the class structure both inside the house itself and the wider world.

As for Libby who gave this a 1 star review, honestly I'd completely ignore her opinion.. she reviewed a highlighter she bought as "sweaty and greasy" honestly love, I think it's just you.

This aside I'd say it's up there at least in my top 10 favourite movies of all time. Definitely worth a watch.

Could really only be set in Korea
Verified purchase
This a brilliant film, I've seen other reviews moan about the implasiblity of some off the situation as completely missing the fact this was set in Korea.

The core off this film is sheer competition for jobs and degrees in Korean society.
Even on the highly educated society of Korea where 700 degree holders will apply for a security job the devide between the rich and the poor still exists.
The desperation for work means they fold boxes for a pizza Company that can't even afford a box folding machine.
Until a once in a lifetime opertunity comes up.
And the Kim's take this opertunity and and grab it with both hands.

And do they grab it.
I have to say I did not see the sliding cupbard coming.
And the total tangent the film takes is utterly horrifying...you know it not going to end well from then on, and I just couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

And...it doesn't. For no one.

And maybe some may think there is a tinge off hope at the end but understand Korean university entry exams, the degrees and the resulting jobs much more a well paying one are utterly brutal....so....no.
