Parade (1984) is my favourite Spandau Ballet studio album, followed closely by Through the Barricades (1986) and Journeys to Glory (1981). I like Diamond (1982) and True (1983), I just don't think they were as strong; but that's just a personal preference. I first purchased Parade in 1987, still a teenager, into the new romantic movement and electronic music mostly. Listening to it for the first time, I decided that I'll Fly For You (1984) and Round and Round (1984) were superior ballads to the single, True (1983); I know True is their #1 single and album, but I thought their music had progressed once step further again.

The Parade and True era was the completed transition from Spandau as new romantics playing electronic synth pop (Journeys to Glory) or simply experimenting with synth, pop, funk, soul and other styles (Diamond) to becoming a global band churning out mainstream pop and R&B. This indeed was their watershed era, with the albums True and Parade reaching #1 and #2; the singles True, Gold (1983), and Only When You Leave (1984) peaking at #1, #2, and #3 respectively. They even - briefly - conquered America. Their success was even evident in their videos, which were now of high quality production, glossy, and often filmed in exotic locations (like Duran Duran, Rio (1982) and so on).

Like most movements, the new romantics were short lived. Gary Kemp then did what he had to, change style, move with the music of the day. It resulted in a string of brilliant singles. What further surprised me about Parade, however, was the quality and strength of the album tracks; Revenge for Love is a simple but brilliant pop song; Nature of the Beast stronger still; With the Pride being the best of the three, a confident ballad to match Tony Hadley's equally confident vocals.

Much better than True. Those who sniff at this album for not having all the hits are clearing missing out on a treat.

I know the band are more proud of the first albums, which did not sell in great quantities, but at the end of the day this was the album which made sure they were rich, and overall is the best commercial album they made and I love it. However producers have to be brought into the equation. As artists I would say there was less input than the first albums, apart from True, but all the same I just love it. Tony Hadley?? Maybe the most underated male voice of recent times. One Direction Lol. what has the world arrived to?
