By Red on Black TOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 3 Jun. 2013
Format: MP3 Download
How nice it would be to pop into a range of intimate venues around Boston this summer and see Lori McKenna's perform in her home town and sit and listen to a voice of such clarity and grace. This reviewer owes a huge debt to other contributors on Amazon who regularly linked McKenna's name with that of the great Patty Griffin whose new album "American Kid" is such a delight. "Paper Wings and Halo" alternatively is McKenna's debut in 1998 and is jam packed with her signature songs which are heart grabbing in simplicity and yet reveal little nuances on each listen that will make this album a very regular return visitor to your CD player. The nearest reference point is Griffins sparse beauty "Living with ghosts" with the template being songs about loneliness and heartbreak. There is nothing new in this of course but the quality of the voice and the songwriting shine through. Thus the sadness of one of the albums standouts "Hardly speaking a word" sees McKenna draw you in with a mix of sad melodic lines and a passionate alto vocal full of emotion. Contrast is provided by the Appalachian harmonies of "Holy Water" which uses a religious theme to great effect. The pure country of the title track with its sad slide guitar is just plain excellent songwriting which McKenna deepens in her later albums. The stirring live vocal of "Swallows me whole" shows her power on stage, while the bluesy "As I Am" highlights a rockier side to her music. The classic lament "Would you love me then" is almost worth the price of entry in its own right.

There is a nice story about this debut which was produced by Seth Connelly in his basement studio.

One of the best albums I have ever heard, at times achingly beautiful. Lori's voice crackles and breaks in an incredible, emotionally stirring way. As a compliment, the laid back and stripped bare guitar playing is perfection. If you need an album to stir the soul, this is for you.

Enjoyable music - I bought the cd after hearing a track on a TV drama.
It was well packaged and despatch on time.

Her first, and in my opinion her best album. Simple, heart felt songs, sung with true emotion and feeling. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music with meaningful lyrics - an all-around winner 3 Oct. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Blend well-crafted music with meaningful lyrics that you can related to and you have Lori McKenna's great collection of songs on her debut CD. The music may be minimalistic in the use of instruments but that's what makes the songs so powerful and allows Lori's singing and lyrics to really come through. This CD is in permanent rotation on our CD player.

4.0 out of 5 stars On the road to greatness 21 Jun. 2003
By Elizabeth B. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Lori's cd is a beautiful debut and many of the songs are outstanding (hardly speaking a word, paying the price, and swallows me whole in particular.) I do have to say, though, that Lori's voice takes a bit of getting used to. Though she's from Boston she has a very folksy, almost country twang. Once you accept this, you will notice that her voice is wonderfully suited for what she writes (small wonder) and the style of her music. Though not every song on this cd is a standout, it's a very promising debut and I'm eager to see how Lori progresses. The good songs on this album are so wonderful I think this album is worth buying and I enjoy listening to it all the way through.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most memorable voices you'll ever hear... 20 Oct. 2000
By perry desmond-davies - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Listening to this recording is as close as you can get to knowing what it's like to hear Lori live. Lori's voice is a captivating force that is so unique, so wonderfully simple and alternately powerful that you'll feel the need to listen to her music over and over and over again. She entered the acoustic arena a couple years ago, and has since become a huge presence on the Boston music scene and beyond. Her guitar style is also very impressive and unique, blending perfectly with those amazingly heartfelt lyrics to bring the listener to the places and people Lori has lived and loved, while reminding us of our own lives as well. As terrific as it is to hear Lori live and unadulterated, this recording make her sound even better because it has been produced so well by the one and only Seth Connelly, who keeps Lori's voice and music as the main focus while adding just the right touch of occasional bass or violin to further underline her phrasing and emotion. I had only seen Lori perform live before hearing this CD, and was sure that any recording couldn't possibly capture her...what a great and happy surprise to hear Paper Wings and Halo, and realize (happily) that I was very wrong. ~(:>)

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! 30 April 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I love the music on this CD. I find myself playing it over and over. If I have my MP3 player on random, I always stop to listen (and sing) whenever one of these songs comes on. I first heard her on NPR, and I have loved every song from her I've heard. Her voice takes some getting used to, but the songs grow on you the more you hear them. Paper Wings and Halo and Would you Love Me Then are two of my favorites.
5.0 out of 5 stars Should be in every music collection 26 Nov. 2014

Lori Mckenna is one of the most underrated singer/songwriters working today.

This debut album (1999) is as close to perfection as can be. Even today it still sounds fresh and new. The entire album is memorable and noteworthy for the highly intelligent lyrics and melodies. There are no duds on the entire album.

Although we're not fans of her more country/western songs, this album showcases her amazing talent without the country twang. She belongs squarely in the great traditions of Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. We're glad that Lori Mckenna is finally gaining the recognition that she so richly deserves.
