Pandemic Diaries: The inside story of Britain's battle against Covid Kindle Edition
When Covid-19 swept the world, governments scrambled to protect their citizens and chart a course back to normality. As Health Secretary, Matt Hancock was at the forefront of Britain's battle against the virus, trying to steer the country through the crisis in a world where information was scarce, judgements huge and the roadmap non-existent.
Drawing on a wealth of never-before-seen material, including official records, his notes at the time and communications with all the key players in Britain's Covid-19 story, this candid account reveals the inner workings of government during a time of national crisis, reflecting on both the successes and the failures.
Recounting the most important decisions in the race to develop a vaccine in record time and to build a nationwide testing capacity from the ground up, Pandemic Diaries provides the definitive account of Britain's battle to turn the tide against Covid-19. Crucially, it also offers an honest assessment of the lessons we need to learn to be prepared for next time – because there will be a next time.

--Tim Stanley, Daily Telegraph
“A helpful contribution to the public record … This is a story about what happens when the entire machinery of government is too clunky, too inadequate to respond to a crisis”
--Charlotte Ivers, Sunday Times“Jaw-dropping”
--Daily Mail
“Explosive”
--Daily Express“This candid account tells the story of what it was like to be at the heart of things. It’s the first draft of history and will help anyone fighting like we did to handle a pandemic.”

“Unputdownable … What shines throughout this book is the eagerness with which Hancock seized the immense task presented to him – managing the national response to the worst pandemic in a century … There is much to learn here.”
--The HouseAbout the Author

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2023I really enjoyed this book! It’s an easy to read thorough account of what went on in government and beyond throughout the pandemic. I found it extremely well written, interesting and informative. Having watched Matt in the jungle I admire him for both humbling himself in front of the nation on television and for his excellent team performance as a camp mate. A brilliant book. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 June 2025an interesting read about a difficult time in the uk and the worlds history. hindsight is a great sight, but this politiician didnt have the knowledge at the time that we now have about covid. yes mistakes were made, and a lot of the good johnson and hancock did, has been ruined by partygate. however this was a very interesting read, and i am sure most people will enjoy the book like i have.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 December 2022You can’t lie that this book just gives you the chills. Knowing what is coming and what was going on behind the scenes keeps you gripped and wanting to read more. Despite Hancock being a controversial guy, I definitely believe this is worth a read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 April 2023Bit long winded. Lots of pages got bored half-way through.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 December 2022While there is a bit too much of putting his own side of the case, it is well written and explains a lot about how Government really works.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 November 2023A page-turner it is not; perhaps Hancock himself made too many amendments on the draft by Isabel Oakshott, who is generally an excellent writer?
The content is characterised by three things: (1) a lot of boasting of 'what he achieved', which is sometimes tenuous or debatablbe; (2) a lot of backstabbing and 'settling scores' which people he didn't get on with; (3) no admission of having made severe mistakes during Covid.
But, above all, and this is the most annoying characteristic of the book (4) the many examples of alleged foresight. This book was of course published two years after the facts, and purports to reflect a day by day diary. Having myself studied and written about Covid since the summer of 2020, I have a fairly good insight of what people knew and when. Especially Hancock's very early alleged foresight (in the early days of January 2020) I find extremely difficult to believe. While no doubt he was alarmed at times, I just do not believe his time version of events. Of course all the main protagonists have alleged extraordinary foresight. Few of them foresaw the colossal harm lockdown would do to the nation (the handful of sceptics who dared open their mouths said so at the time).
The purpose of the book seems to be an attempt for Covid 'to be the making of Hancock'. His ambitions were never limited by his limitations, as his bizarre bid and early withdrawal of the Conservative leadership contest in 2009 proves. At the time few had heard of him; and at the beginning of Covid few had heard of him still.
So this is a self-hagiography, quite an unique genre.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2022Honestly, I got annoyed whilst reading the book, for the past 2 years I've hated Matt, but the truth is...everybody from the PHE to the Cummings are the ones I should of hated on. Great read, learnt a lot
