When Jack wakes up with a hankering for pancakes, he asks his mother to make them. Jack's mother is busy, though, and directs Jack to go through the labors of Hercules to fulfill his desire: Jack not only has to harvest and thresh the wheat and have the wheat milled, but he has to encourage the hen to lay an egg, milk the cow, churn the butter, fetch the jam, mix all the ingredients together and cook the pancakes over the stove. By my calculations, Jack doesn't get his pancakes until dinnertime. I kept expecting him to holler in frustration, "What the heck does a guy have to do to get a pancake?"
On the other hand, none of these thoughts occurred to my three year old son. Fascinated by the book's colorful pictures, he enjoyed talking about what wheat is, where milk and eggs come from, that some cows have spots and wear bells, and how sometimes good things require patience and lots of hard work. And then we ate pancakes and jam.

Ok, so if it says (pixies) after the title it means it's tiny! Think smaller that the classic ladybird books. The story is ok, if a little old fashioned, but would probably be fine to read for pancake day, if only it had arrived on time. If you are ordering it for home it will be ok, but if, like me, you want to read it to your class than it's far too small.

Pancakes for breakfast, pancakes for dinner, pancakes for tea - if my toddler could have it his way :-) The book is great. Lovely pictures, quite artistic but still very realistic, unlike other books for babies. You can point to objects and animals and they are recognisable to your child.

This book was purchased so I could help the children I work with learn about where things come from. This book did cover the subject but was so old fashioned that the children would not have recognised what was going on apart from maybe milking the cow. This book was written by a well known and well loved author but could do with being updated till the modern world. I sent this book back for that reason. Would be a good story if only updated.

Daughter's absolute favourite. The 1st version she got given for Christmas ended up in the bin after an accident and I thought that was the end of pancakes pancakes! A month of constant requests and I found this board veresion online - never seen such a massive smile when I produced version 2! I now know pancakes pancakes off by heart!

Pancakes, Pancakes has been my favorite "elementary" book for years! I love this book even now and I am in middle school. Eric Carle is a great children's author. I have about every one of his books he has ever written. The illustrations are beautiful to look at and the stories are so appealing to young readers. Great job, Mr. Eric Carle!!!!!!!!

There is something about this book that my 2-year-old loves. Linus has his blanket, my son has "His Pancake Book." It's colorful and has a cute story. He wants to read it every day and has to sleep with it at night (for almost a year, now). We originally got him the small $5 version but he had to have the 8X11 hardback. This one shows the pictures better and is extremely durable! He gives it 5 stars.

I have read most Eric Carle books in the past but had never heard of this one. It's a bit different - a bit American, or at least written for the American market - but I do see me using it next Pancake Day.
