HYBRID O.I.S. + uses five-axis correction to thoroughly suppress blurring all the way from wide-angle shots to powerful zoom shots. It also achieves superb effects when shooting while walking. This lets the user capture crisp, clear images, without blurring, in almost every shooting situation. This revolutionary five-axis correction function corrects the kind of roll direction hand-shake that often occurs when shooting while walking, in addition to horizontal, vertical, yawing, and pitching four-axis correction.
The 2D to 3D Conversion function makes it easy to enjoy 3D images without even mounting the 3D Conversion Lens. Simply connect the camcorder to a 3D-compatible TV with an HDMI cable. The 2D to 3D Conversion function then uses the image processing capability of the engine to convert 2D images into 3D. This is an easy, casual way to enjoy the excitement of 3D.
1080/50p recording (Full-HD 1920 x 1080, 50 progressive recording) at a 28-Mbps bit rate conveys about twice the information of 1080i (interlace) recording to produce ultimately beautiful image quality. It minimizes afterimages and flickering caused by subject motion, and renders crisp, detailed images with smooth-looking motion even when shooting a fast-moving subject in a sports event. The progressive recording fully complies with the new AVCHD Progressive standard.
The Advanced Highlight Playback function is designed for users who want to view recorded images as quickly as possible. It detects zooming, panning, scene changes, faces, etc., in recorded images as "highlights" by using the I.I.S. (Intelligent Index System). In addition to these automatically selected scenes, the user can add others as desired. Then, it automatically plays back the detected highlight scenes according to a set time interval and save them.See all Product Description

The main reason for the upgrade was the wide angle lens. For interior shooting in the average living room not to mention most other indoor situations the lack of wide angle is extremely frustrating.
This camera goes to 32.4mm as opposed to the usual 50mm so you get a lot more in and its great quality.
I had tried a cheap wide angle add on lens (£10 ebay from Hong Kong) as an experiment on my SD5 and it was simply unusable the quality was so bad.
Image stabilization in the V500 is incredible and even better than the SD5.
I bought mine in Comet for £229 after Panasonic gave £50 cashback as part of a 2012 promo (up to Oct 31st so be quick!).
I've ordered a 64gb SDXC class10 card from Amazon for £32 which is also incredible. 64GB is a lot of video.
Selecting 1080 50p mode on this camera gives the best results if you are going to be playing back on a HD tv with the unit. Be wary though because this mode is not supported on older cameras.
I cannot for example swap and change mem cards from one camera to the other if I use 1080p. With 1080i though there are no problems and the quality is still fantastic.
White balance, focus and iris on this new model are all greatly improved. Quick and responsive.
The quality between the two cameras is actually quite surprising. The V500 is so much better.
Its very small and light which would make holding it steady a problem if it were not for the image stabilizer. With it though it has no effect and it fits nicely in the hand.
LCD is touchscreen and fairly easy to use.
the camera is chargeable without having to take the damned battery off. Brilliant.Read more ›
The camera was very easy to use and manipulate. It is extremely light, the only issue is that it is small and therefore sits within a male hand grip in a manner that makes the use of the controls slightly more ungainly at times.
There are many facets of the camera that I yet to use, but I am already impressed with its potential and ease of use.
The 50x zoom is a particular asset and the picture quality is exceptional. Battery life was better than expected.
I used a class 10 32mb SDHC card, the image quality is excellent.
In summary, I would strongly recomment this camcorder
Where this camera falls a little is not down to the camera but the decoding/playing ability of modern day computers - including both Apple Mac and PC. The 1080p formats save .MTS files which can't be opened on Mac at all for playback without a video playback program, such as VLC. Windows Media Player can just about open the file. Playback on your TV via cable is not affected.
Thankfully I found a Mac program which will convert the MTS files into ones that both iMovie and Final Cut Pro X will understand, .mov. If you are using Iframe video recording then this saves as .mp4 by default which both Windows and Mac can open and work with. The program I used is called ClipWrap and cost about £35 but was a worthy addition to my new camera.
* Amazing Quality
* Quick Save (requires a grade 4 or higher SD card.. I recommend the SanDisk Extreme Ranges... specifically 16GB or higher SDHC or SDXC cards for the most record time).
* Easy to Use
* Short Battery Life (3.5 hours in most occasions, quickly dimishes.. consider buying an additional battery)
* .MTS file format not natively supported on Mac. Use Clipwrap to overcome this though!
Amazon is not really very well geared up to purchase such items as you cannot select features you are looking for and then, get a filtered list.
Anyway, what I was looking for was a HD camcorder where I could use an External Microphone. And unfortunately Panasonic V500M does not have an External Microphone socket.
The next model up - Panasonic V700M - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-V700-1080p-Ready-Camcorder/dp/B006T9JHZK/ - has an External Microphone socket and apparently, better video although, I have not seen the quality of V700M's output.
V500M is built well and handles well. It picks up sound within 1.5 meters really well in non-zoom mode. The video quality is good too. It is easy to operate. I would definitely recommend an HDMI cable. Something like this would be ideal - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nedis-V1-3a-Cable-Plated-Connectors/dp/B002MSU5BM/
By default, V500M comes with VW-VBK180 battery that gives between an hour to two hours of recording time. I ended up also buying VW-VBK360 battery equivalent from Amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006YQQKCQ/ - alongwith, an external charger - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0042AUVLC/
If I could choose again, I would choose V700M and an external microphone - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Polaroid-Condenser-Shotgun-Microphone-Camcorders/dp/B005S45YX6/
I might go for X900M - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-Camcorder-Built-In-Viewfinder-Built-/dp/B006U98G74/ or if budget was a concern, I might go for X800 - http://www.amazon.co.Read more ›
