Bought this (MC-UG342) to replace a Panasonic MC-E42N, which had lasted 24 years (aided by some occasional "first-aid treatment"). First impression was that it is surprisingly similar to the old model: slightly lighter (6.3 versus 7 kg) but still looks and feels robust (not flimsy like some other brands I looked at in stores); slightly wider suction head (323 mm); and the old tubes and tools etc. fit the new model (I saved the extension hose, tubes and tools from the old MC-E42N, just in case!); and they take the same dust bags (type U-20E). However, they differ in that the new model doesn't have adjustable power (which I formerly found useful) or a "bag full" indicator (which was pretty useless, anyway). The "loop-shaped" top to the handle is better in use (and for carrying) than the old straight handle and there is a more substantial "lower cord hook/carrying handle" on the back (better for carrying it up or down stairs and easier to loop the mains lead around).
Delivery (from SSE) was fast. Assembly (basically, attaching the handle with one screw and pushing the hose onto the suction inlet) was kids' stuff.
The leaflet that came with the cleaner says that the MC-UG342 (and MC-UG344) have "automatic height adjustment ... (for) any carpet pile" (it doesn't mention hard flooring). During the first two uses of my MC-UG 342, I found that it "gripped" rather too tightly to my carpets (I anticipated building some pretty big "push and pull" arm muscles!) and it tended to lift cushion vinyl flooring and rugs (I don't have wood flooring). However, in subsequent use (3-4 more uses) this has ceased to be a problem (possibly, something has freed up with use or it has simply lost a little suction power now that the bag is partly filled). At present, it glides pretty well across carpets and vinyl, with apparently plenty of cleaning power.
The big (6.1 litre) dust bag is ample; mains lead is 6.7 metres (same as the old model; just about enough for me).
Overall, I'm pleased that I didn't spend 2 or 3 times as much on a different brand (you know who I mean!). It seems pretty much as good as my old Panasonic and if it lasts as long, I'll be 90 when I next have to review a vacuum cleaner (work it out!). I've given 4 stars rather than 5 in case the "gripping carpets and lifting vinyl" effect comes back, but I'm guessing it won't be an issue.
