Panasonic HM-TA2 HD Mobile Camera - Red (8MP Stills) 3-inch Touchscreen (Trip
Night View Mode
The HM-TA2 is equipped with Night View Mode, which lets you shoot with twice the brightness* of the previous model. When shooting, this function automatically detects dark scenes and the mode selector button lights up on the LCD screen. Simply press the button to start shooting with Night View Mode. And you can shoot clear images with minimal noise even in dark scenes, such as dimly lit indoor shots or party scenes.
3.0-inch Touch Screen
The HM-TA2 has an easy-to-see 3.0-inch touch panel with intuitive operation. The touch panel has a simple button layout and is easy to operate. The vertical configuration makes the camera easy to hold for shooting, while the horizontal 3.0-inch screen simplifies playback. To further increase operating ease, the Rec button is isolated and positioned below the touch panel. So you can simply pick up your mobile camera and start shooting or playback. A tripod stand comes bundled with the HM-TA2. It's handy for web camera use, or to hold the camera still to prevent blurring while shooting.
Even with its compact size and super mobility, the HM-TA2 lets you shoot Full-HD (1920 x 1080/30p) movies and photos. Just slip it into a pocket or hang it from your wrist. It goes wherever you go. Perfect for capturing everyday fun.
The linear PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) system records sounds that are faithful to the original. You can also shoot a photo while recording sounds. Enjoy playing your recorded sounds and photos simultaneously. This is handy for a wide range of applications, including business meetings and lessons.
E.I.S. (Electrical Image Stabilizer)
The E.I.S. (Electrical Image Stabilizer) system helps to correct the kind of hand-shake blurring that often happens with compact cameras. Record all the images you want, whether you're shooting while walking, or taking self portraits, without having to worry about blurring.
Give the image some warmth with Sepia mode, make it extra cool with Monochrome mode, or capture beautiful skin tones with Soft Skin mode. Match your shooting to your mood and subject.
Still Picture Recording
The HM-TA2 lets you save a smile from someone special, or capture the beauty of flowers bathed in sunshine. You can save memories like these in high-quality images with 8-megapixel resolution. The built-in LED lets you capture bright, crisp images even in dark situations, like indoors or during nighttime events. You can also cut out and save still images by simply pressing the Photo Cutout button while playing back a video. This ensures that you'll never miss that perfect shot again.
Easy Web Uploading
Upload your movies onto YouTube and Facebook. As soon as you plug the TA2's built-in USB terminal into a PC, the embedded HD Writer PE 2.0 application launches automatically. With a single click, you can instantly share your movies with your family and friends. The TA2's built-in USB terminal means that there's no need to carry around an adaptor. And you can charge the battery by simply plugging the USB terminal into a PC. In addition, The TA2 features a mini HDMI terminal that lets you enjoy images with natural Full-HD quality by directly connecting the camera to an HDTV.
Top customer reviews
The tripod is very handy, as you might want a self portrait of some sort. Also, there is a USB extension cable so you're not actually plugging the USB contained on the camera straight into the PC, which is what you have to do with the FLIP, and that made it feel like the weight of the camera was going to break the USB off at some points.
It's very easy to download, plug and play. There is some kind of software that comes with it, but if you're used to using memory sticks and external hard drives, you could treat this the same for ease of use. Of course, if you wish to edit photos and film etc, it is worth using the software.
finally, the memory itself is small, so would strongly suggest you purchase a memory card - and I would recommend SDHC at least 8GB for good quality as well as amount you can record.
Very easy to use.
Was expecting the viewing area to be bigger - it is only about half of the screen.
Watch out for cost of extras if you don't already have them; eg cable between camcorder to HDTV (RRP AU$59); cable to recharge battery (instead of using pc to recharge)(RRP AU$19); SDHC 16GB class6 card (RRP AU$79) - all would be cheaper on amazon of course.
Haven't tested still photos yet.
Tested with SanDisk Extreme HD video 30MB/s. SDHC-I (not supplied).
H264-MPEG4 AVC (Part 10)(AVC1) (Planar 4:2:0 YUV Full Scale) with AAC MP4A audio.
1080-1920 30fps (progressive) - 1 minute = 97mb. Better quality than 720p.
720p-1280 30fps (progressive) - 1 minute = 74mb. Good quality overall.
540-960 30fps (iFrame) - 1 minute = 167mb. Fair quality with large file size.
480-640 30fps (progressive) - 1 minute = 26mb. Low quality.
PCM S16 LE - 16bit depth at 48Khz stereo.
AAC MP4A - 256 kbps at 48KHz stereo.
AAC MP4A - 128 kbps at 48Khz stereo.
AAC MP4A - 128 kbps at 48Khz (low gain) stereo.
The sound quality in all modes was very good. Lower quality settings had a metallic ringing to them and lost definition, but were still perfectly acceptable. The best option was the AAC 256kbps as it benefits from the compression the PCM mode lacks.
3264 by 2448 (8M) (4:3)
1920 by 1080 (2M) (16:9)
1600 by 1200 (2M) (4:3)
640 by 480 (0.3M) (4:3)
All modes were satisfactory. The best being 3264 by 2448 on account of its high resolution.
Excellent sound quality in voice recorder mode and video mode. Very functional and easy to use. Simple menu system that is easy to read and use via large touch-screen. Includes a useful built in LED light that can be activated while recording if needed. Camera appears to have a mechanical focusing mechanism and electronic face recognition. Battery is built in and will charge when plugged into a PC. USB interconnect cable supplied. The unit will work more or less straight away on Windows XP-SP3. The digital zoom is as good as it gets and is no match for a proper lens system. The only real drawback may be the video a quality which, as I recall, looked inferior to my previous Mino Flip 3rd Generation. I had to drop the Mino because it refused to power up after three months of ownership. The Camcorder comes with good tripod and a wrist strap. I would prefer to call it a media recorder as it records video, audio and photographs. If you choose to buy one, don't forget to include a SDHC card that is fast enough to read and write HD video. I chose a SanDisk card that boasted a generic speed of 30MB/s. It works on the 720p and 1080p video settings.
I'm not entirely happy with the video quality at 720p and 1080p. Are there other camcorders on the market that might be better? When you watch objects that move fast across the screen you get a cloud of compression artifacts covering these moving objects. The compression artifacts vanish as soon as the object stops moving. If you film fast moving objects in low lighting conditions the picture can be pretty choppy. Another thing was a rather noticeable grain on the darker areas in the video. The grain switches on and of depending on the lighting conditions. I suppose this is the automatic gain control in action. I've noticed quite significant changes in saturation and white balance from recording t o recording. In normal conditions with good lighting and a still subject the picture quality is very good in all modes.
The Panasonic is better than the Mino Flip in every way except perhaps for the video quality, but I'm going to give this device a five star rating none-the-less as it represents good value for money and is very easy to use.
