An ultra-slim camera with stunning image quality and superb performance. The inclusion of the 14.1MP High Sensitivity MOS sensor with its light-speed auto focus raises the picture performance above others in its class. The XS3 combines still picture creativity with Full HD video and wraps it up in a stylishly slim package.
14.1 Megapixel High Sensitivity MOS Sensor
The high demands of today's digital cameras have led to the introduction of ultra-fast MOS sensors. Panasonic's 14.1-megapixel MOS sensor supports Full HD video, high-speed burst shooting and improved sensitivity delivering excellent picture quality, even in low light.
Mega Optical Image Stabilisation for Blur Free Pictures
Image stabilisation is essential when taking high zoom pictures without the use of a tripod. Optical stabilisation is the best method as it counteracts the blur that normally occurs by hand holding the camera but does not degrade the image. With Panasonic's Mega O.I.S. pictures are sharp and blur free even when the shooting conditions are tricky.
Fastest Auto Focus - "Light-speed" AF
Fast focus is a must when you don't want to miss the moment of a lifetime. None come faster in a compact camera than the lightning fast 0.1 seconds of Lumix. Borrowed from the technology used in our Lumix G system camera, the incredibly fast focus speed is due to the double speed readout from the sensor when the shutter button is half pressed.
Powerful 5x Optical Zoom Lens
For a camera so slim it seems incredible that a 5x optical zoom lens can be included. But Panasonic's expertise in lens manufacturing means they have cleverly engineered the lens array to provide a 5 times magnification that takes you in close to your subject just when you need it.
24mm (Equivalent) Wide-angle Lens
The advantage of a wide angle lens, such as the 24mm equivalent included in this camera, is that you can get more subjects in the shot. That's great for indoor use where you may want to photograph a group of friends or for outdoor shots where you want to shoot an amazing landscape or sunset. Either way, you will find the wide angle option adds to your creativity.
4.7 Frames Per Second High Speed Burst Shooting
High-speed burst shooting with full resolution, up to 4.7 frames per second with AF Tracking is available enabling you to capture high speed action with a sequence of still pictures that are sharp and defined.
2.7 Inch (6.7cm) LCD with High Angle and Auto Brightness Mode
A 2.7 inch LCD is offered that works well in bright light due to the Auto Brightness sensor that automatically increases brightness by up to 40% when in sunny conditions. It also has a "high angle" mode that enables you to still see the image when holding the camera up high.
iA (Intelligent Auto) Shooting Mode
The art of taking interesting photographs is to have a camera that is ready to shoot when the moment arises. iA mode lets you take the picture without you having to worry about what settings to use. The camera intelligently works out the type of scene that you are trying to capture. Whether it is a picture of a person's face (using Auto Portrait mode), a dramatic landscape (using Auto Landscape mode), a close up of a beautiful flower (using Auto Macro mode) or a group of friends (using Auto Face Detection). All the most commonly used shooting scenarios are programmed in to the camera and the camera makes all the internal settings automatically, leaving you to just press the button.
Creative Panorama Shooting Mode with Filter Effects
The Ultra-wide shooting panorama mode not only allows you to capture vast landscapes in one complete picture, but in a Panasonic first, this camera also offers "Creative Panorama" mode which allows you to choose from a number of filter effects that can be applied to your shot.
Creative Filter Control for Recording
To add an interesting new look to your photos any one of 13 creative filter effects can be selected before taking your shot: Expressive, Retro, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, High Dynamic, Dynamic Monochrome, Miniature, Toy Photo, Impressive Art, One-point Colour, Cross Process and Soft Focus.
Creative Re-touch for Playback
Some of the creative filter effects that are available before taking your picture are also available to add to your shot after you have captured it. You can decide whether effects like Sepia, High Key or Dynamic Monochrome add an interesting new look to your shot, and apply the effect to the original picture after you have reviewed it.
Multiple Scene Setting Auto Shooting Modes
Up to 16 pre-programmed scene modes are offered, giving you the choice of a wide range of shooting scenarios. Just select the one that best describes the scene you are taking, and the camera makes the best settings automatically.
Separate Video Recording Button
Recording motion videos can be started with a press of an independent record button, which conveniently enables you to switch between photo and video shooting instantly.
MP4 Full HD Video Recording Mode for High Compatibility
Also offered in video mode is MP4 (H.264) format recording. High Definition video including 1920x1080 can be shot at 25 Progressive frames per second. MP4 format is compatible with many video editing software packages, but is also compatible with iTunes for playback on Smartphone or tablet devices.
USB Charging Function
A USB AC adaptor is included in the box. This convenient accessory enables you to charge the battery inside the camera from any mains power outlet. It is compact and easy to carry around with you giving you a wide number of options to charge up the battery. Alternatively, you can use the supplied USB cable to charge the camera from a USB port on a computer, for example.
200MB Built-in Memory
Approximately 200MB of built-in flash memory is included which is enough space to capture about 50 photos, very handy if your memory card runs out of space at a crucial moment.
Micro SD and Micro SDHC Card Recording
Panasonic's ultra slim cameras also utilise ultra-compact memory card recording to Micro SD and Micro SDHC cards. This means that despite their compact size, recording capacities of up to 32GB is available.

Just over 9 cm long, 5.5 cm tall with a sllm body under 2cm (approx sizes)
The camera is quite nice looking with the two tone effect quite stylish really and smart.
In terms of specficitaion it's par for the course with budget models pretty straight forward and bare bones.
My quick fire list of good and bad
+ Super compact size, and very light you want a really small compact you've found it
+ Useful 24 - 120mm (full frame equivalent range) nice to have a good wide 24mm setting
+ Simple easy to use point and shoot operation (no manual modes here) though you do have exposure bracketing and exposure compensation
+ Takes full HD video 1920 x 1080 pixels 25p (mono sound) quality was "ok" for a compact in this price range
+ Autofocus and metering were quite good acceptable speeds, good hit ratio (use the AF assist in low light though) Metering was quite predictable and consistent didn't need much adjustment bar very contrasty scenes
+ 5cm macro is "ok" for a camera in this range, not bad for close up work (some are 10cm quite a difference)
+ 2.7" 230K LCD is fairly good in most lighting, it's not a high res panel but this is what you get at this price range
+ Biggest shock..you get 200MB of onboard memory which is great (certainly enough to get you out of a tight spot if you forget or fill up the card) it's a bit odd Panasonic can include this on a budget model and not on their higher end models (TZ range)
- Fairly ho hum image quality, the lens is quite weak at the widest setting (lots of smearing in the edges and corners), not as bad telephoto end some edge softness. Central area is quite sharp.Read more ›
This is a tiny, very light, truly shirt-pocket camera that costs little more than £60. It is not going to be hand-crafted from aluminium ingots, or perform like a DSLR, or anything else to write home about. But for the size and price it is remarkably good. It powers up very quickly, it finds focus quickly - ideal for those 'grab' shots - and even has AF Assist for low light. I find the menus a little confusing as there are 'menu' and 'quick menu' and they do different things at different times. It's easy to confuse 'Play' and 'Display', the latter being given a rather too valuable space on the main dial, and you can arrive in roughly the same place from different directions - but that's probably me having to adapt from a Leica C-Lux 2. And whilst the Leica was infinitely better built, the tiny XS3 actually works faster and no less well. You can set the shooting display to give a live histogram, and combined with direct access to exposure compensation (+/-EV) this makes it fairy easy to allow for difficult subjects.
It's the first time I've had a 'panorama' function and with a little care this works well, like a cine camera with instant stitching. It works well in all four directions, but if you move too quickly the result will be blurred, and if you move too slowly the camera times out before you've gone as far as you want.Read more ›
