If you are reading this review you have probably read the industry reviews and are thinking of buying this camera.
I'm a long time DSLR user, but like many I just don't want to lug around a big camera with a big zoom lens. I also have a Fuji x30 and its big brother a Fuji X100T; both very good cameras, which I took on holiday rather than the DSLR. I was quite surprised to find that I used the small zoom x30 far more that the fixed lens x100t.
I'm now of a view that a small camera, with a decent zoom and a large (1") sensor is just about ideal for travel and really for general photography. I had a LUMIX LX 5 in the past and really liked it. So, after a lot of searching and comparisons I plumped for the TZ100. You can take yourself down cul de sacs over camera comparisons. Think about your needs/ lifestyle and let that guide your decision rather than camera comparisons. This camera suited my needs.
However, it has far exceeded my expectations in use. It is abosolutely packed with features and trying to learn them all will have your head spinning, especially as the online manual is not as helpful as it could be, but simply putting it in Program mode and letting the camera do the thinking would be to miss so much this camera can give.
The zoom range is important to me and the 25-250 zoom works well, although you rapidly stop down as the zoom extends. I didn't find that a major issue over the faster lens of other cameras such as the Sonys, which have much shorter zoom range.
In whatever mode the picture quality is exceptional, both in jpeg and in RAW for post processing. For DXO users the camera is included in its profiles.
HD and 4K video is very clear and detailed. Two functions stand out for me. The first is being able to take 4K video bursts and extract a frame as a still, at 8 megapixels. Great for action sequences where your dog sails over a fence or kids are jumping around and you would have no chance of getting 'that' shot.
Post Focus also lets you take a shot and choose your Focus point after you have taken the picture. Very good for macro shots.
I could go on, but there are many professional reviews of this camera's capabilities for you to read. The point I want to get across is that this little camera pretty much can do whatever you want from simple point and shoot to some really sophisticated photography.
My only slight disappointment is that the rear screen does not articulate, but it is a nice to have rather than a deal breaker. That downside is balanced by the excellent touch screen which is a real boon for skipping around the menus and it has a quick menu button to bring up the main functions and change with a touch.
If you decide this camera is for you I suggest that you get Alexander White's guide to the TZ100 in Kindle edition, but download it to an iPad or tablet to get the benefit of the photos and to navigate more easily. It is an excellent guide and is more of a reference point as it goes much further than the manual, providing really good tips as to when to use various functions.
Get a screen saver, but avoid the matte anti glare type which can give a fuzzy screen experience. I use an Expert Shield Crystal Clear protector, which is excellent. Get a good case too. I have the Panasonic leather slip case which fits like a glove. If you shop around this can be got at a reasonable price rather than the eye watering RRP. It's a nice size for belt attachment. Also an extra battery and battery charger.
There is no battery charger with this camera. It is charged in camera using a USB attachment and plug supplied, but it is fiddly to use and I have reservations about the wear and tear over time of the port cover on the camera. I ended up with Expro's Value Pack of a travel charger and two batteries, including a car charger lead - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00YDIYJIY/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_13 - available on Amazon.
All in all a great camera which Is already my 'grab and go' camera of choice for a holiday or a day trip.
I bought this for travelling in South East Asia and it really delivered. Small enough to fairly comfortable fit in a pocket and very low key, you would have no idea how good this is just looking at it - much less overt than a DSLR but still packing serious punch. Had no issues with heat or humidity, survived a few showers too! Great build quality as it also survived a drop onto stone from a couple of feet with only slight panel damage.
All round great!
There are a few things I'd change, but they're personal preference rather than bad design so I can't mark it down for those. It's priced competitively? That's a tough one to judge, I'm happy with the performance at the price and don't feel I'd have got the quality with some of the cheaper compacts. I've had quite a few so that's based on a bit of experience.
4K not interested wanted a travel stills camera, this fit the bill and gives me a rest from the weight of the Nikon 810.
I am a 'Manual ' Camera freak much to my surprise with a little supervision the automatics are very usable..
Oh what a surprize Zebra for stills, allows you to nail the exposure easily.
Raw and jpg, so good thinking of just using jpg's as the camera output for its size and specification is second to none.
