The Lumix SZ8 Compact Digital Camera – 12x Optical Zoom Plus Built-in Wi-Fi Wrapped in a Stylish Body
Whoever said style and practicality couldn’t co-exist? The Lumix SZ8 squeezes a mighty 12 optical zoom and Wi-Fi connectivity into a svelte camera body that will slip easily into a pocket. Also on board are numerous special effects options – including Creative Control, Creative Retouch and Creative Panorama – to add fun and creativity in equal measure to the experience of shooting with the camera. This is one device that will suit everyone, from the family user to those who simply want a pocket model with a bit more ‘poke’ in the zoom department.
12 Optical Zoom Puts Creativity Within Your Reach
The SZ8 comes equipped with a 24mm ultra wide-angle lens with a powerful 12x optical zoom. In 35mm terms the focal range on offer is an impressive 24-288mm. Despite the camera’s slim and stylish profile, it is evident that there is versatility here in spades.
16 Megapixel CCD Sensor
A high resolution 16 megapixel CCD sensor provides a picture with enough detail to enable a photographer to be able to crop parts of their image and enlarge them without seeing a noticeable deterioration in picture quality.
Easy Wi-Fi Connection to Your Smartphone
Hook up the SZ8 to your smartphone by displaying the special QR code on the camera screen and using the free-to-download Panasonic Image App on to scan the QR code with your handset. Set up is easy and only takes a few seconds. A wireless connection between the camera and your smartphone or tablet lets you use a variety of Wi-Fi functions such as remote shooting, instant image transfer and geotagging.
Unique Filter Effects for Photos and Videos
As usual with a Panasonic camera, the SZ8 is fully loaded with a variety of Creative Control digital filter effects that can be automatically applied to images to add drama and fun. For example, Creative Panorama allows uses to create dynamic vertical or horizontal panoramic photos just by panning with the camera. The following options can be applied to both stills and videos: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect and One Point Colour.
3-inch 460,000 Dot Resolution Intelligent LCD
Compose and review photos and videos with the able aid of a large, high-resolution rear panel LCD display. Via the high quality screen, great visibility is assured in a wide variety of lighting conditions.
HDR (High Dynamic Range)
With High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode selected, several photos are shot in quick succession at different exposure levels. From these varied shots a single image is composed. In this way both over exposure and under exposure of the image is avoided and stunning results are achievable – even in difficult lighting conditions.
Wi-Fi Features on the Go
Upload and share your images on social networking sites immediately. Just use the Panasonic Image App available for your smartphone. The latest App also features a Photo Collage function, so photographers can combine several images into one for even easier sharing. Using the GPS facility of your smartphone or tablet it is also possible to record information relating to the location where the picture was taken.
720P HD Video Recording
Use the full extent of the camera’s zoom to draw faraway subjects closer and capture great looking video as well as stills. The SZ8 can record dynamic HD video in 1280x720 pixels resolution, and in Motion JPEG format too. A dedicated video recording button is provided on the top of the camera, thereby making it convenient for users to switch from shooting photos to shooting movies.
Top customer reviews
In use, works well so far - perhaps a little slow to set itself up for a shot, particularly when set to intelligent auto mode, with Flash switched on - takes a while to decide whether it needs to use the Flash or not, by which time the subject could have moved or looked away. The various shooting modes are perhaps a little simplistic for the more advance users - there is no Program mode as such but by running through the various settings, it is possible to create the right effect.
With a 12x Optical zoom, more than adequate for most ordinary situations. The wifi function allows images to be transferred to your smartphone or other wifi enabled device, either in a batch or as you go. Probably a bit of a drain on the battery in the auto transfer each shot mode but handy if you have a small memory card inserted.
Unlike some of the other compacts around, this one has some internal memory, so when your card is full, you can still take more shots - at full 16m, only 9 shots but more at lower resolution.
All in all, a very capable pocket sized compact with enough functionality to suit most tastes. Recommended
So after nearly 5 years I thought the step down from the T range (the S range) would be sufficient for my needs. I bought the camera for light general use.
This camera deserves an award it is so bad! My cheap spare Samsung Galaxy phone photos put the SZ8 to shame. The SZ8 pictures are so blurry and there is no clarity they are unusable. Also with the video if you are filming anything with multiple distances away it constantly refocuses making any recording unwatchable.
I'm sorry but for the money I paid and the quality of photos and video it's shocking. I really should have done more research, which I am usually good for.
Avoid at all costs!
It does have some good points, but ultimately the images from this camera are well below par and even on a £50 camera wouldn't be acceptable.
+ Nice 12x zoom range giving you 24-288mm equivalent on 35mm
+ Decent 3.0 inch 460k LCD quite easy to see in brighter light quite sharp
+ Has built in wifi
+ OIS (Optical image stabilisation) is good for about 3 stops or so
- Images were very soft in the corners esp at the wider end of the lens range, extending quite a bit into the pictures, even at mid zoom levels the lens was still quite poor. At the full telephoto end not so bad but still unimpressive sharpness wise
- Mushy jpeg processing even at low ISO levels, lots of smearing and OTT noise reduction, at ISO 400 things fall to bits and get progressively worse up to ISO 1600 which is more like a painting than a photograph
- Video is only 1280 x 720 (mono) @30fps again suffering from over processing and mushy looks. I'd expect better here as just about every camera including ones less than half the price offer this. Full HD video is expected
- Ho hum battery life, Panasonic quote 200 CIPA, I got around 140 odd
You get your usual scene modes and panoramic function, as well as a HDR mode that makes your images look even more mushy and overprocessed with very low contrast
I don't expect miracles in the budget compact sector, but sadly Panasonic have put very little effort into this model
With small sensors like this you don't get great image quality, but this isn't really good enough, not only is the lens not very good across most of it's range, it's more like 3mp, rather than 16mp
The SZ8 is a good example why compact makers are having a hard time with camera phones, there is really no reason to look at this, small tiny sensor, average video, lots of smeared noise reduction, if it were half the price It might gain a star. For the money I would look around at alternatives.
I compared the images from my Fuji F70 to this camera, and it wiped the floor with the Panasonic even with images downsized to 5mp, even at native 10mp v 16mp the Fuji showed far more detail and better dynamic range. Granted the Fuji has a slightly larger sensor, but still it shows how little things have moved on in the compact sector over the years.
I would certainly advise spending a bit more on something better, it's also likely your camera phone produces better images/video than this.
Colours on various settings and different light conditions were uniformly pale and washed out. Focus, again in different conditions and settings, was uniformly muzzy. Side-by-side pictures for comparison using my mobile phone produced far better results.
To be sure the price is fairly low for a 12x optical zoom camera. But there's little point in a low price when the results are so grim.
