This camera is different. It looks great, it feels great, the controls are great.
I really like the 4K video and the still shots I have achieved are so much better than continuous at say 10 fps.
I use Leica 15 mm prime, Olympus 12-40 mm Pro and Olympus 40 - 150 mm Pro and the camera and lenses produce stunning shots.
I still use my other cameras, Canon DSLRs and Panasonic bridge camera, each has a special feel and meaning. This camera has to be up there with the camera greats.
A lot has been made of the Panasonic's "huge" size for a m43 camera. While it is a little large, it's a very comfortable fit in my (medium sized) hands and has enough room for all the control buttons to be easily accessed and not bunched up close together. From YouTube and online reviews, I was also expecting the camera to be heavy, but it isn't. In fact, it's lighter than the much smaller Olympus PEN E-PL9 Olympus PEN E-PL9 16 MP Compact System Camera with Electric Zoom, 4K Movies, 3-Inch Display, Wi-Fi and 14 - 42 mm Pancake Lens - White/Silver, let alone the PEN F. And here's where the Panasonic falls short of Olympus - it feels a little cheap in the hand. The plastics are hard and the switchgear is light and plasticky compared with Olympus cameras which always feel like really premium products, using real metal on many switches and with a reassuring weight and dampening to their actions. Does this matter to image quality? Not at all, but it does make the Olympus more of a joy to own and use.
However, I chose the GX8 over the PEN F because unlike Olympus, Panasonic has a habit of refreshing its cameras far more frequently than Olympus and that means, "older" models become cheaper sooner and I got this GX8 for about the same price as we got my wife's E-PL9 - at less than half the GX8's original selling price.
In use, the Panasonic produces nice images. Personally, I prefer the colours from Olympus, but both allow for customisation of the colour profile, either using presets (I choose vivid for my JPGs) or more specific changes of the RGB channels. I don't review Raw files because all cameras produce flat looking Raw files - they all need processing. I do shoot in Raw+JPG and use Raw where I need to push processing beyond a few minor tweaks.
I'm not much of a videographer, so my opinion on that wouldn't count for much, but the stills are very very nice from the GX8. It's a fantastic travel camera, with decent weather sealing which means you can take it out with confidence (assuming you have a similarly weather sealed lens).
At the 2018 prices for this camera, with the big discount over the original price and very marginal improvement in specs in the GX9 PANASONIC DC-GX9EB-K 20.3 MP Lumix G Compact System Camera Body - Black, this is an easy camera to recommend. In some ways, the GX9 is lower-specced than this camera as it doesn't have weather-sealing. The weather-sealed GX8 with a similarly sealed lens makes for a superb street camera in drizzly Blighty. While in absolute terms, I prefer the feel of Olympus cameras and find their in-body image stabilisation to still be ahead of this Panasonic (e.g. the GX8 is still behind the venerable OM-D E-M5 mkII Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II Camera Body - Black, which is pretty old now), I don't expect the PEN F to come down in price any time soon and the E-PL9 styling just isn't to my tastes. Despite not being absolutely perfect, the GX8 is very good value for all the features you get.
I don't get drawn into arguments over m43 sensors anymore. I have had a full frame digital Canon since 2009 and while I love the photos it produces, m43 cameras can produce beautiful images, too and given the size and weight advantage of m43, I take the smaller kit out way more than the full frame. I would now never consider taking the Canon on holiday with me.
I have owned and used many cameras in my life, from Rollieflex to Mamyaflex 21/4 square format to Nikon and Leica 35mm TTL reflex. I have used Canon and Nikon DSLR's and still the Lumix comes out best of the bunch.
i thought there was a fault at first because it uses a blue speckle on edges of surfaces that are in focus.
what an amazing feature, plus peeking and zebra functions, 4k photo, level lines ....
