Conclusion

The Panasonic GX7 is a full-featured mirrorless camera that offers very good photo and video quality, a highly customizable interface, plenty of useful features, and robust performance. It's marred by a so-so viewfinder, lack of in-camera raw conversion, and a disappointing in-body IS system.

Reasons to buy

  • Photos have pleasing color and sharpness
  • In-body image stabilization brings anti-shake to any lens
  • Well constructed, easy-to-handle, highly customizable body
  • Large and detailed tilting electronic viewfinder
  • Wi-Fi with NFC capability

Things to consider

  • Pronounced rainbow 'tearing' effect in viewfinder
  • In-body stabilization not available during image composition
  • Camera tends to use small apertures in Program mode
  • No sensor-shift stabilization in movie mode

Suggested for

Those seeking excellent photo and video quality with a very customizable interface; street photographers

Product Description

Pansonic Lumix DMC-GX7CEB-K G Series System Camera

The sleek retro style of the GX7 belies a highly advanced system camera capable of delivering outstanding performance. Despite its compact form it incorporates a tilt-able electronic live view finder, a highly responsive 3-inch touch-screen monitor and Wi-Fi functionality. Supplied in a black body finish with the matching ultra-compact 20mm F1.7 lens, the GX7 is a truly stylish camera you'll love to use wherever you go.

Photo Quality

16MP LIVE MOS Sensor and Venus Engine Noise Reduction

The 16.0-megapixel Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine enable better resolution and high-definition textures. Light capturing and noise detection areas have been increased and advanced NR realise image smoothing in specific areas whilst maintaining natural detail.

Quad-speed AF Drive and Low-light Auto Focus

The Auto Focus sensor drive has been increased to 240fps rate which means auto focus adjustments can be made up to four times faster when used with some of our Lumix lenses. In addition to this, Auto Focusing in low light has been greatly improved so that focusing is now possible even without the use of the AF assist lamp.

Functionality and Ease of Use

High Resolution, Tilt-able Live View EVF with Eye Sensor

The incredibly high resolution (2.76M dots equivalent) LCD electronic Live View Finder with eye sensor, not only offers approximately 100% colour reproduction in a bright display, but is also tilt-able through 90-degrees.

1.04m-dot, 3.0 Inch, Tilt able, Capacitive Touch Screen LCD

The incredibly high resolution (2.76M dots equivalent) LCD electronic Live View Finder with eye sensor, not only offers approximately 100% colour reproduction in a bright display, but is also tilt-able through 90-degrees.

Pinpoint Accurate AF with Improved Functionality

Focus accuracy down to a tiny area is possible with Pinpoint Focus mode. And now it's even easier to see the area of focus due to the new Picture-in-Picture display, image magnification between 3 and 10 times and manual fine tune focus after auto focus has taken place.

Focus Peaking

To help when focusing manually, areas of the image that are in sharp focus are highlighted in the viewfinder or on screen so that you can more easily see when even the smallest of details are in focus.

New Silent Shooting Mode

A handy new mode on the camera enables you to shoot in complete stealth. When activated the flash and focus light is turned off, eliminating any visible disturbance, and the shutter and focus operation become totally silent.

Highlight/Shadow Gamma Control
Preset or manual dynamic range control

A new Gamma control allows you to adjust the parameters of bright parts and shadow parts separately. Choose from three pre-sets or make the adjustments manually. This allows a high level of perfection to be achieved at the shooting stage.

9 Programmable Function Buttons

Up to 9 function button options are available, four on the body of the camera and five on the LCD screen. Each FN button can be assigned to your favourite feature so that you always have those preferred settings to hand.

In-body Optical Image Stabilisation

Panasonic's very effective in-lens Optical Image Stabilisation is automatically enabled when fitting lenses that offer this system, but now an in-body sensor-shift OIS system is also available when using other lenses that do not offer built-in OIS.

Front and Rear Control Dials

Major controls, such as the aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation settings, can be quickly adjusted with the front and rear dials.

Networking

Built-in Wi-Fi for Enhanced Network Functions

Send pictures over Wi-Fi to upload, save or print

The inclusion of Wi-Fi functionality adds a whole new level of control and convenience. This new functionality includes: remote control by smartphone or tablet device, automatic back-up of photos to a Wi-Fi enabled tablet, and playback, print or transfer your pictures to other networked devices in your home. You can even add the location to your pictures using the GPS function of the tablet or phone that the camera is linked with.

Remote Shooting and View with Tablet or Smartphone

Use your smartphone or tablet device to see the live image through the camera lens and then take the shot. Using the "Peer to Peer" or Wi-Fi function in the camera, the picture can be monitored externally and controlled remotely by a connected smart device. • Controlling device requires "Panasonic Image App” for iOS / Android.

Wireless NFC - World's First for Interchangeable Lens System Camera

As a World 1st, Panasonic brings NFC (Near Field Communication) capability to this system camera model utilising the latest smart communication technology. NFC compatible products can share or be ready to share data just by touching the two devices together.

I want to start off by saying that I don't usually write reviews, but I have trawled through so many reviews, most of which I found very helpful, when deciding which camera to spend my hard earned cash on, that I feel obliged to do my part, and write a review on this fantastic camera.

To start off I'm not a professional, but am a keen amateur, and for someone who wants to learn the fundamentals of photography, and improve their photography skills, without splashing out on pro grade gear, this camera is perfect.

The biggest draw for me is the GX7's form factor. I have looked at a lot of DSLR's, and love the handling of them, but due to their bulk I can't imagine myself taking one everywhere with me. I've also looked at other micro 4/3 cameras from olympus, which are a lot more portable, but are just that bit too small for my hands. For me the GX7 is the perfect compromise, it's not quite pocketable, but can easily fit into a small bag with room for a couple of extra micro 4/3 lenses. The ergonomics of the GX7 is also superb. The grip is just big enough to give something substantial to hold onto, and the buttons are laid out where you'd naturally expect them to be. I also love the twin dials, which are a dream to use when shooting in manual mode.

The micro 4/3 sensor does a stellar job, at reproducing images that are sharp, and natural in colour. I know the image quality isn't quite on par with the best APS-C sensors, but to be honest the difference is negligible, you can easily make up this difference by using good quality, fast optics, which the micro 4/3 system has one of the best selections of. I also found when shooting in RAW mode and converting with lightroom I have been able to get some outstanding results.

Update: WEF an update to Photomatix 15 Feb (for me) the software now works perfectly with RAW files from this camera.

UPDATE: If you use Photomatix Pro for HDR using RAW files then read my note I have added at the bottom of this review (02/02/14)
UPDATE: Solving WiFi connection issue when no Access Point found by camera. See bottom of review (02/02/14)

I own a G3 and bought the GX7 as an upgrade and to be able to use my existing lens collection. I have just uploaded an image to the customer gallery which shows an extreme zoom in of photos taken within 5 minutes of each other using exactly the same settings on each camera and lens. I zoomed in using photoshop until the pixels appeared on screen then did a screen capture at this maximum magnification. The settings are in the text of the image.

The bottom line is that in real world conditions the G3 is just as good as the GX7 and in fact is much easier to use. The GX7 is a lovely camera, well built and with a fantastic range of features that the G3 doesn't have. Controlling the camera using my Xperia Z Pad was amazing. The camera itself has a high quality feel in the hand, I find all of the switches and dials easy to locate and use and they are very intuitive.

However, extra features aside, I have found the much cheaper G3 (£249 inc lens) gives results which are just as good as the GX7. In fact I find the metering on the G3 to be better than the GX7 which constantly seems to underexpose by about a stop. (I have checked all settings BTW) I took both cameras out and about around town and took similar photos with both cameras, printed them out and showed them to a couple of friends who are not into photography. Both preferred the photos shot with the G3.

Got my GX7 for a bargain price on Amazon Prime Day, only £300 although I had to settle for black rather than silver. Getting used to the multiple setting options after some serious study of the advanced operating instructions. Could do with a larger handgrip, would not suit anyone with large hands. The camera has produced some excellent images, see attached pics.

Didn't buy from Amazon but enjoying it so much felt compelled to say something about this camera. A bit about me first: I use a Canon 7D, back up is Canon 550D, 580EX II flash, small number of L series lenses. Get paid to photograph cycling and running events enough weekends to nicely supplement my income.

You can find in depth reviews online and amongst informative reviewers this is one or two points that I think notable ..not the only ones:
- had low expectations for the flash as I've not spent in the past to get a good point and shoot or CSC camera that had flash controls. What was in my memory of small cameras I had in past - pics that shouted taken with flash. Pictures I didn't want and can easily avoid with an SLR. I was messing about with it to learn more about it and found that not only can you exposure compensate the flash but that the flash also has an auto compensate facility and what's more it works really well. Nice shadow fill and doesn't shout too much flash at you.
- the grip. I have long fingers and it's really nice in the hand. Partly if not mostly cos the material is a really nice grippy rubber / plastic
- my first touch screen but more notable is I wouldn't be happy if it didn't work well in anyway; am an impatient demanding sort. I read that its an I proved touch screen and it works very well. Very responsive.
- the tiny depth of field from f1.7 on the 20mm is a delight too
- oh and finally, the focussing is fantastic in very dark conditions (bedroom at night with not so bright bed side light only). My 7D with the 580ex assisting would have struggled.

Next is testing how quick and accurate the AF is with my young, fast moving relatives. Expecting it to fair well and me to carry this more and more.
