Featuring a high-speed F1.7, this single-focal-length lens lets you capture beautiful, expressive images with a delicate soft focus and high contrast. The versatile 20 mm of focal distance (Equivalent to 40 mm on a 35 mm film camera) is suitable for wide variety of occasions from daily snapshots to the deliberately creative shots taking advantage of its beautiful soft focus. The LUMIX G 20 mm / F1.7 II ASPH. features a dramatic compactness and light weight despite its F1.7 brightness. With this thin, pancake lens mounted, the LUMIX G is easy to carry around. You're always ready for whatever inspires the photographer inside you – everyday scenes, passing landscapes, indoor shots in dim lighting, casual snapshots, or artistic shots. The sophisticated metallic-finished look of the LUMIX G 20 mm / F1.7 II ASPH. increases the joy of ownership and further enhances LUMIX G cameras. Comprising of seven lenses in five groups, the lens system uses two aspherical lenses most effectively to minimize both distortion and chromatic aberrations, achieving super high resolution corner to corner. Seven blades give the aperture a rounded shape that produces an attractively smooth effect in out-of-focus areas when shooting at larger aperture settings. This lens also features a highly reliable metal mount, and uses multi-coated lens elements that minimize ghosts and flare to further enhance its optical performance. When mounted on the LUMIX G cameras, the LUMIX G 20 mm / F1.7 II ASPH. allows use of the advanced contrast AF system, which includes a Face Recognition function, for more convenient, more enjoyable shooting.

No difference in AF speed/noise compared to original version, but this one has a nicer look and finish, and the prices are comparable.
Highly recommended as a walk around/street lens.
Fantastic little lens. Compared to the 14-42mm stock on my GX1 this is a world apart. As small as you can get, very bright, and decent auto focus. So far I've not noticed the loss of image stabilisation in my other lenses. I use this for family shots with small (and fast) kids, often in low light domestic situations so it's tough on any lens to cope with everything. This works as a great all-rounder. Home shots, days out, landscapes, portraits. All come out clear and fine. I generally shoot with the GX1 in auto mode and aside from a few shots with the aperture a little too wide, or depth of field too tight, this has worked very well. Auto focus is fast and good, manual focus is quick and responsive. Body is plastic which feels a little off compared to the quality of the body and the other Panasonic lenses I've used, but easy to overlook at such a good price.
In a word: recommendable!
It's a pancake lens, so it's really compact but it doesn't compromise on quality in any way.
Pros: Great image quality - it's pretty decent wide open but stop down to F4 (or lower) and it's brilliant across the frame.
Depth of field - You can definitely get this but remember that it's reasonably wide in terms of a standard lens and you won't be getting the same "drop" as a longer range lens
Discreet Profile - It really is that small.
Cons: - The focus speed is not great. Its not as terrible as some would suggest and fine for normal subjects but there are far quicker lenses than this.
Does not come with a lens hood but they are cheap to find.
The photo provided was taken on this lens and proves what you can get out of it in terms of quality.
My model is the second version of the lens but they are basically the same optically as best I can see.
My wife has the first version and image quality seems the same. The newer one focuses IMO quicker and is far quieter.
I bought it with my GX7 and it suits the camera really well. It is very small but when compared with my Canon 50mm f1.2L was just as sharp (albeit it is not as fast). The colour and contrast are great. It is the sharpest of my lenses with the most contrast, though the others are zooms. It's image quality and sharpness is definitely up there with Canon's pro lenses ... which I am selling to move to micro four thirds.
I would thoroughly recommend it if you are only getting one lens as for street photography with a 35mm equivalent of 40mm it is a good useful lens which doesn't show out. A M43 camera with this lens is a fraction of the weight, size and cost of a good SLR but will produce great results.
I use this lens on an Olympus EP-1 primarily, its small size complementing the compact body well. I have also used it on an EM1 and EM5, but on the larger bodies the small lens size seems less important, and I usually work with larger alternatives.
On the EP1 the lens is compact enough for my camera to fit in a coat pocket, or hang over my shoulder in an ever ready case without being overly heavy. Even my four year old can hold my EP1 camera steady with this lens attached.
The lens is a cheapish option to go alongside a kit zoom, using the zoom for versatility, but switching to this lens when the light levels drop, as F1.7 is about as fast as you get in an affordable lens (OK, you can spend a lot more to get a F1.0 or F0.95 lens, but they are nowhere near this compact).
One 'feature' of the lens on the EM5 is some slightly unusual noise patterns at higher ISO's (3200 and above), which appear as regular lines of noise, which can ruin some pcitures The noise lines do not appear in the same way with other lenses on the same camera, or on other cameras with the same lens, so this is something to watch out for is you are an EM5 user and looking to buy this lens.
The second downside is the autofocus speed. When comparing this lens to the Olympus 17mm F1.8, on olympus cameras the autofocus is very slow. I've not tested on panasonic cameras, but it definately lags behind olympus lenses (all of the ones i have tried?) on the EM cameras.
The focal lens is great for a prime, not too wide or long, with a very natural angle of view, ideal as a walk around, jack of all trades lens). Because of this and its size and optical quality, it is not a lens I ever see myself selling on. Because of the slower autofocus and noise issue with the EM5 it only gets four stars.
