This is the second book by this author I have read. The plot idea is fascinating and draws you in, but the novel's discursive, almost 'stream of consciousness' style can be challenging to follow. At times the book also descends into black fantasy, painting characters - often based on real individuals - in a very unlikely light. It is hard to take seriously when this happens and I almost abandoned the book several times before the end.
There is, I'm convinced, a potentially excellent writer and novel here. But I'm far from sure we are seeing either at their best. I shall follow the author's further work with interest.
