OK so this hasn't arrived on the scene via Neil's official company, however as this was a broadcast by KLOS FM in LA, the sound is pretty good, although the crowd noise is very loud at times. Cow Palace was not designed as a concert hall, but there were some great gigs there (check out Live At The Cow Palace: New Year'S Eve 1976 for starters), and this was surely one of them.

We have a wide selection of Neil's music from the Springfield's Mr Soul which opens the show to the famous acoustic works such as Heart of Gold & After the Goldrush to not so popular (with some folks)songs from Trans, Sample & Hold and Computer Age. The classics Down By The River, Cortez & Hurricane are all worth a listen. So a great concert from the 80s which runs for about 2hr 10min at well under a tenner - bargain.

Packaging is a slimline plastic jewel case in a cardboard slip case (why the slip case) - it's not my choice, but it does the job I guess, after all it's the music that counts, and that's simply great!!

2 CD set from Neil Young's much maligned Geffen period, this live set features Crazy Horse, arguably Neil's best band performing hits and misses from his carrier up to that date plus as is common with a Neil young concert music not yet released (at the time) which later appeared on the 'Life' (seven songs) his last for Geffen album, plus songs from 'Trans' 'Sample and hold' and 'Computer Age' as well as one only from 'Landing on Water' the album this tour would have been supporting 'Violent side'. I would suggest that despite there being a lot of songs from this period this is a great concert and over the two CDs (120 minutes) you also get classics such as a 'down by the River' 'Like a Hurricane' and 'Mr Soul'. The music is as well played as you would expect from a Neil Young and Crazy Horse album, and Neil seems to be having fun during the recording. The crowd are very strangely edited at times but this is still a good honest recording.
The concert was originally recorded from Radio (KLOS) and the sound quality as such is much better than your average bootleg. I am not sure this is though an officially sanctioned release but I do applaud Leftfield media for getting this concert out, and would recommend this to any fan of Neil Young, especially at the reasonable price from this 2CD set.
If you are new to Neil's music try one of the core albums first, this is not going to find new fans, for more adventurous fans this is quite a rewarding listen, and better than many of his 'officially recognised' live abums.

Not to put too fine a point on it, this is a damn fun show to listen to. Neil is obviously having a good time and Crazy Horse do what they do best, putting down a solid groove for Neil to sing and guitar sling around. They even do a bit of comedy! The sound is very good and though the crowd is enthused & rowdy, they don't intrude on the sound (unlike the recent Live on Air: Lost Tapes releases which were ruined by the screaming yobbs, in my opinion). I saw one show at the 'Palace for Cows' (Paul McCartney & Wings, 1976) & while no one would ever confuse the place with a concert hall, it did have a certain rough magic about it & that is clearly reflected in this performance. For the Neil geek, this is essential; for the casual fan, this is still worth the pounds & pence. This Yankee gives it 2 thumbs up. Cheers.

Why almost?

A couple of things really. Main grouch, the vocoder synthed vocals on a couple of tracks are so far down in the mix as to be inaudible. Maybe this was some technical problem to do with the vocoder itself but it's still annoying as I really like them on Trans (surely it's time for that one to be re-evaluated as one of Neil's best). Neil has a habit of howling like a dog at the end of the rocking tracks which is irritating and sounds stupid. Still, long-time fans of his have always known he was a little bit barking. The phony phone call with his mother also sounds- well, I've already said stupid once. Lastly, the album should really be by Neil Young & Crazy Horse. If this had been an authorised (which isn't, in this case, the same as a bootleg) album it almost certainly would have been as Neil is always the first to give the Horse due credit.

And what's good about it?

Pretty much everything else. There's a great selection of songs or, rather, a selection of great songs. Neil and the Horse are on excellent form. Lots of long guitar solos and plenty of thrashing for them as likes it -me! me! The sound quality (previous exception excepted) is pretty good. The audience reaction isn't overdone. And at over two hours it's good value for money. It doesn't deserve five stars but I'd have rated it 4.75 if I could. In other words, it's one of his best live albums. Up there with Weld.

Get it!

This release is on the quite excellent Left Field label who have released radio broadcasts by Bruce Springsteen, and the overall quality is just outstanding. This one's by Neil Young and Crazy Horse and comprises a 2CD set from a gig in 1986, but don't let this put you off becausae this is a superb live set by one of rock's greatest pereformers at the top of his game. Full of classic Neil songs upto the time of the tour plus eight from the album 'Life' that wouldn't appear till the next year, a total of 129 minutes of 24 songs oh and the odd telephone call and his noivecoder which he used a bit at this time.Of the classics we have the timeless 'Heart Of Gold' a real standout version, 'After The Goldrush', 'Cortez The Killer', 'Down By The River', 'Hey Hey My My', 'Powderfinger', 'Like A Hurricane', a real greatest hits from Neil at the time of this tour.Crazy Horse at their very best add a real depth to his songs. Neil Young then and now is one of the greatest performers there is, an awesome songwriter, guitarist and a voice that brings every song to its greatness. This is I feel one no Neil fan will want to miss at any price, but if you've never yet spent time in his musical company give this a listen and you'll see why he remains and always has been a classic artist. From rockin' electric awesome driving rock such as the opening 'Mr. Soul' to the beauty of his acoustic outings such as 'Inca Queen' make this such a special set.. Crazy Horse deserve a mention as Mr's Sampredo,Molina and Talbot really add to make oit so enjoyable. The great news is that arrarantly Neil's just completed a new album with Crazy Horse for this year and also working on another as well.Uminmissable radio broadcasts from California 5 stars plus a classic album without doubt.
