There's something to be said about having one of the persons responsible for the software you are using take your hand and escort you through its features; it's as though you're being shown exactly how to interact with a member of the family.
Informative without being heavy-handed, there's an intelligent yet relatable introduction to software features, and the eventual build will take you to where you can make changes to and construct your own brush-styles and streamline some effects. It's well rounded and a lot of information to digest, but entirely personable. The reader is left to feel they are a part of the process, there to be instructed, but how to work with it to get the results the author gets. Of course, the more experience one has with the program over all, the more they will get out of it...that's kind of a given.
Beyond all that, this book is a solid ten. Thank you, Mrs. Threinen-Pendarvis, for sharing your knowledge and giving a little bit of your gift to the world.
01/03/2010 - Okay, since my review above, 24/04/2009, I have a further comment that may help Painter X users. For those having problems coming to terms with the program, try doing Painter 1 & 2 at LVS Online, these are two great six weeks courses that I can guarantee will get you into Painter X without pain, and if you have purchased Cher's book, you will make great use of it as I am. Hope this helps and goodluck.
I would still recommend this book, despite this flaw. It's organization makes it relatively easy to hunt for the info you need via the table of contents, and admittedly, it isn't aimed at complete novices to Painter, nor is it intended to replace the Painter help menu. My questions were fairly simple, like I didn't understand why the blender brush wouldn't work on a layer. (Check the "pick up underlying color" box on the layers pallete for it to work). I suspect that this book is aimed at someone who would already know or be able to easily guess this.
