From the Back Cover

When Mr Gruber takes Paddington to Buckingham Palace to watch the Changing of the Guard, there are so many people in the way he can't see a thing. But a mysterious someone 'on high' comes to his rescue and Paddington has a very good idea of who it might be.

Format: Paperback
I bought this book during a visit to Buckingham Palace, as a gift for my young niece. As a book for children I can't fault the book. Its illustrations are high quality and the story introduces the reader to the fine tradition of the Changing of the Guard (even though it never really explains what is involved). The palace is never shown in its entirety, but the parts of the building that are shown are accurately depicted. I also enjoyed the sense of tension that builds as Paddington struggles to view the guardsmen, adding an element of excitement to the tale.

However, I do have some issues with the book. Mainly, the blurb on the back of the book contains so mainly 'spoilers' that it is essentially the entire story. Additionally, the actions of the mysterious stranger are never fully revealed, and I felt a strong feeling of being 'left hanging' as a result. Finally, who is the enigmatic Mr Gruber and why is he taking a bear to see Buckingham Palace to start with? What happened to the Brown family who originally looked after Paddington? Perhaps there should be a warning that this is not the first book in the series, and that the reader should first read the earlier books in sequence.

My daughter loves Paddington.

She's 9 now and the magic hasn't faded.

This book is just another in a great collection from Michael Bond.

The drawings really make this book come to life.

Quality of book is good and story line which I didn't know may be a bit too old for my 3yr grandaughter but I'm sure she will soon get to love it!
