'The Purpose Driven(R) Church has brought focus and direction to more pastors and church leaders than you can count. What a gift!'---John Ortberg, bestselling author Every church is driven by something. Tradition, finances, programs, personalities, events, seekers, and even buildings can each be the controlling force in a church. But Rick Warren believes that in order for a church to be healthy it must become a purpose-driven church, built around the five New Testament purposes given to the church by Jesus. 'The issue is church health, not church growth!' declares Warren. 'If your church is healthy, growth will occur naturally. Healthy, consistent growth is the result of balancing the five biblical purposes of the church.' Rick Warren shares a proven five-part strategy that will enable your church to grow * warmer through fellowship * deeper through discipleship * stronger through worship * broader through ministry * larger through evangelism The Purpose Driven(R) Church shifts the focus away from church building programs to emphasizing a people-building process. Warren says, 'If you will concentrate on building people, God will build the church.' --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Why does your church exist? Is it purely for those who currently attend.
Built on the foundation of the Great Commandment (to love God and love your neighbour) and the Great Commission (to Go into all nations and...), Warren encourages the church to focus on 5 purposes of "outreach, fellowship, disciplship, worship and ministry" and organise the church around these purposes.
It recognises that everyone is on a spiritual journey and therefore the book suggests that the church needs to focus on five groups of people (community - unchurched, crowd - attenders, congregation, committed and the core) and build the church from the outside-in, i.e. reach the unchurch and take them through to committed and serving God.
I would encourage any church leader to read this book, and reflect on what it means for their local church. It has inspired me, and as a church we a prayer refocusing on what God wants for our church. (Happy to discuss with anyone who wants to drop me an email).
Finally reminder - God is building HIS church. Do we really what to help Him in that process where He has placed us?
An absolute jewel if you desire to grow spiritually as well as increasing your sphere of influence.
We are all comitted to something or someone and this book helps you decern to whom you are comitted and where that comittment might lead you.
I call this book a chiropractic treat for the soul.
Gives you an adjustment. Some times makes you sore, but always lifts you to a new level of growth.
One of the things that I found in previous churches is a lack of acceptance of me as an unemployed person, or any willingness to bear my burdens.
I am afraid I just did not recognise this as being Christianity. It seemed to catch the worst aspects of modern business management. He seemed to be happy with one covert if he alienated 100 others. I am quite serious, this does come across. But, Jesus said to seek the 1 lost and leave the 99 saved. The opposite message.
I worry that this approach may have created a church of thousands, but has put off hundreds of thousands in the process. Of course, some are saved and some are lost. But that is in God's remit, and we must present a clear, honest and winsome gospel that attracts people to turn to God in The Holy Spirit to accept Christ as their personal saviour.
So, I confess I rejected Mr Warren's approach and would advise others to do so too.
