Product Description

Product Description

In the late 1970s, a peculiar sound began bubbling up from the land of 10,000 lakes. Buried beneath 50 solid inches of annual snow, Minneapolis made a Sound quite different than what the pop world foresaw. It issued forth as a slick, black, technologically advanced fusion, poised to storm the charts. Never known for sizable African-American populations, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in fact harbored a tight-knit community of musicians working feverishly through the late 70s and early 80s toward a radical manipulation of American dance music, coating futuristic funk with the glamorous sheen of guitar rock. Synthetic ebony and ivory met electricity, with sexed-up results sent shockingly across the pop heavens like violet lightning.

Despite there being a few dud tracks and only a couple of stand outs, the overall experience and pleasure of listening to these two CDs is one of a subtly exotic and increasingly thrilling nature, akin to finding a secret forest full of neon flowers, exposure to which leaves you feeling narcoticly aroused and heavy blooded. A mention should also go to the well researched and informative accompanying book which is presented as a hardback novel in a card slipcase.Nice one Numero Uno!

HASH(0x98727d80) out of 5 stars Soul Sounds from 1974-84 3 April 2015
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The main draw for many people getting this deluxe 2-CD set of music from various artists in Minneapolis (dating from 1974 to 1984) will be the intriguing "Prince connection". In fact, Prince Nelson is credited for guitar on two tracks on here, plus he had musical relationships with several other artists on this collection, including Andre Cymone, The Family, 94 East, and Rockie Robbins. But don't do thinking this all sounds like Prince or "Purple Rain" outtakes; the range of artists on this collection demonstrate that the Minneapolis-St. Paul area was a surprisingly fertile location for Soul and R&B music.

A few notes on some of the artists featured. In addition to "name" acts like Andre Cymone, The Family, and Alexander O'Neal, there is a very good band called Flyte Tyme that features Cynthia Johnson (who famously sang the lead on the big hit "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc.) on lead vocals, sounding uncannily like Chaka Khan. The band Mind & Matter featured a very young Terry Lewis and James "Jimmy Jam" Harris. The style of other material on the two discs ranges from silky soul with soaring harmonies and gritty funk to more mainstream R&B tunes and even some quirkier electro-soul numbers. Among my favorite new discoveries are the tracks by Walter Lewis & the Blue Stars, Music Love & Funk, Herman Jones, and Haze.

There are plenty of good and very good songs on this collection, but I have to wonder why the compilers at the Numero Group decided to splurge for the big expense of packing these 2 CDs with a 146-page booklet ... or rather, a book --- inside a hard cover package! The many pages of information provided about these recording artists and the Minneapolis music scene at the time is certainly comprehensive, but frankly it was all more than I needed or wanted to know. The other thing I didn't like about the packaging was the very tight fit of the two CDs inside the paper sleeves on each end. I almost needed pliers to get them out!

Nevertheless, there is no denying that this is a beautiful package and the variety of cool music on here more than justifies the purchase. Once again, Numero Group has put together another pleasing compilation of obscure recordings that will satisfy fans of 1970s soul and R&B. You don't need to be a Prince fan to enjoy this one!

now straight up there was alot of talent that came from Minneapolis in the R&B scene despite how Prince and his camp tried to play it to the media. this compilation shows the sound and vibe was already there. and Alexender o neal wouldn't sound out of place on a Rick James Production going by his track on this set. the thing that Prince had that is missing here is a artistic vision putting the words and music together as one. its like you got a blueprint however you need the final piece to make it jump off and Prince that. this set has some cool jams and things which you can obviously here on other Minneapolis sound releases in due time.
