This is a perfectly engineered piece of equipment, especially for this price. I know you might be put off by this little known brand (not really, they are one of the biggest 'indie' players in the speaker market), and how expensive this lovely pair of headphone is, but trust me, this £200 will be THE best money you'll ever spend.

I've own expensive headphones, and not-so-expensive, & downright cheap and nasty ones before. The Sennheiser HD202 set the bar for the first ever headphone; at £20, there was no other headphone that was close to beating it. It had properly sound insulation, and moderate magnets to deliver the sounds. But after a hour of intense music, it gets rather mono-toned and dreary. Then came the Sony MDR-XB 700, headphone that is still the comfiest (with those massive sofa cuddling you ear), and still with the biggest bass. 3 years ago, it was king. The sound was rich and open, and i mean OPEN. They didn't feel like headphones, rather, like a stereo with its speaker a tad too close. But the 700, as perfect as it was for bassy music, never did quite make it to the high note league.

Bass is easy to produce; just add a bigger magnet. The higher notes however, are not. I had headphones that SCREECH when it can't handle the high note (and indeed, that was the call from the 700). This is not pleasant, as most actual music is reliant on high notes.

And that is where the PSB comes in. It may not pack a big punch at the bass, but because everything else is so rounded off, you don't notice that deficit. At the high notes, you just get a nice sound. There is little static, and indeed you'll need the room to be silent to hear them. The middle notes aren't dramatic, they don't scream at you, they're just there.

Managed to get these headphones from Amazon France £144 delivered to London UK. Having read a lot about PSB speakers and having watched Paul Barton, PSB's CEO interviewed, I really began to trust his motives. According to him, recorded music is tailored to be played back through speakers and not headphones. Therefore some tuning adjustments are needed to be made so that headphones present music reproductions as if we are in the room listening to good speakers or a live band. He calls this 'Room Feel' technology. Anyone wanting to know more about this just go to YouTube and type in "Paul Barton, room feel". The headphones are quite large, over ears, but very comfortable. I have many quality headphones but these, along with another set (Yamaha Pro 400),are the most enjoyable I have. My other headphones the, AKG K551, Yamaha HPH-200, Grado SR80e's, all fulfill some aspect of the sound I like but only the PSB M4U-1's and the Yamaha Pro 400's give quality and enjoyment to every aspect of music, highs, mids, bass, pace, instrument placement, timing, vocals and other qualities. Another great and useful feature of the PSB M4U-1's is because they are quite efficient they play loud enough from an Android mobile phone without needing a headphone amplifier. They are not really portable though, as they are just too large, and may look a little odd out and about. In the 80's and 90's there was some great British HiFi on the market, Arcam, Musical Fidelity and other even better brands. They produced a really great sound that was very different to the Japanese sounds of the day like JVC, Hitachi, Technics, Pioneer. Pioneer did try to copy our 'British' sound and did succeed. These PSB's have a feel of that 'British' sound. I would be surprised to find anybody who does not like the sound these PSB M4U-1's produce.

I tested the noise cancelling version of these headphones and was mightily impressed. Therefore I ordered a pair, or thought I had. Inadvertently I ordered the cheaper version. Initially disappointed that I had made such a stupid error. Nevertheless I am suitably impressed with the option I ended up with. They are not cheap, but then you pays your money, you makes your choice. Quality earphones these are.
