There are so many bluetooth speakers on the market it can be hard for newcomers to make their presence known, B & O, with their first release in this arena have certainly managed this.
This is due to 2 main reasons in my eyes, cost and design. I have an older smaller but very good bluetooth speaker, the Soundmatters FoxL V2 which I'm pretty happy with. So I hear you ask, why did you buy this?
I really like the design and the fact that it goes VERY loud, and it doesn't try and be a jack of all trades, no inbuilt mic for speakerphone operation. Bluetooth with Apt-X and 3.5mm input only on the audio side and a USB socket for charging your phone.
This is well put together, the chassis is aluminium and the speaker covers are plastic, polycarbonate I think. They are not designed to be user removable, which is a shame as swapping these over for a different colour could be an attractive option.
So how does it sound?, well B & O haven't let us down in that respect, a balanced audio signature with a nice bass response, flat not bloated. What I am struck by is the 360 degree sound, pretty much however you have this speaker positioned in space it sounds virtually the same, there is a small change if you listen very close edge on. That's a bit odd, it's not really mono and it's not stereo, you can of course affect the sound by placing this in a corner. I even tried it in my bath (without water!) and there was a real lift in the bass, too much in my opinion but it works quite well with spoken word.
It has very small feet along the long bottom edge which aid stability, although it hasn't fallen over yet. It doesn't have the same feet along the short edge but it can be set vertically quite easily without tipping over.
It's very easy to listen to and doesn't really need much EQ, although as hearing is very different from person to person your mileage may vary, if anything for me I prefer a slight boost in the treble. The bass is nicely controlled, not bloated and quite impressive for the size of enclosure mainly down to the dual passive radiators, one each side. You can feel the bass coming off this thing.
Like most others I was unsure as to which colour to go for, I thought the all black was too boring (controversial maybe), the all green a bit too, well...green. This option whilst not perfect for me had more appeal, I was slightly concerned that the rose gold finish might be a bit too pink, but I'm happy to report that it's not at all. It looks rather beige to me, it matches the leather handle rather well.
I do wish they had included a slip case or bag for this, I can see the speaker grills getting scratched quite easily in transit, so my next job is to try and track something down, no doubt in the not too distant future if this become popular there will be bespoke options available at huge cost.
I did actually find something that fits this speaker quite well, whilst not ideal this does work. CushCase Corduroy Sleeve / Case for Apple MacBook Air 11 inch (Colour: Tan). It's a little on the roomy side but it's not too big and has a nice premium feel to it. Although I wouldn't want to squeeze the AC adapter in as well as it might scratch the speaker.
Bluetooth range I hear you ask? Well I haven't managed to test that much so far, indoors or out, it works well from room to room in a 2 bed flat with thin walls but that doesn't really tell you anything, I should have more opportunity in the coming days to test this further. It's very easy to set up, I didn't need to touch the bluetooth button on the speaker, as soon as I switched it on my phone saw it in my bluetooth devices.
Having had this for just an hour, this is the first part of this review, it came charged and I haven't charged it any further so I'll have to report back on battery life.
So why not 5 stars...well I feel it doesn't quite warrant it, 4 and a half maybe but as I can't actually give it that then it has to be 4. Later on I decided to give it 5!
**I've now tested indoor bluetooth range, in an open office I can easily get 50m, so far in fact I can barely hear the speaker. The more I listen to this speaker the more impressed I am, it's not going to replace my full size systems but it's sound, portability and style make me smile every time I use it**
*** One other thing to add, I'd love to be able to charge my phone without actually playing music from it, but that doesn't seem to be possible at the speaker automatically shuts down after a few minutes if it's not getting any input***
****Another thing which is mentioned in the specs but not fully explained is the Bluetooth sharing feature. 2 devices can share the bluetooth connection to the A2 at the same time, when the 1st device is playing music the 2nd device has control and can take over playback by hitting the play button on their media player, then control passes to 1st device. Ok so it's not mixing in the true sense but it's quite fun****
****I've been asked about day to day experience and battery life. I'm happy to report that in use I've yet to find a real problem, I'm especially impressed with the Bluetooth performance in terms of range and quality, it's not yet dropped out. This has been an issue on previous Bluetooth speakers and headphones that I've had. As for battery life, well the truth is I'm still on my 1st charge as I don't use it that much at the moment, hence why I haven't commented on it****
*****When the battery drains to almost empty the available volume deceases quite a lot, so much so that it's only really useful for listening if you are within about 2m. When this happens the power light next to power socket blinks to show you it needs charging, great but it would have helped it this was a bit more noticeable. One other thing I've noticed, the way the speaker reproduces audio, it's not simply a case of ones side of the speaker plays the left channel and the other plays the right. What happens is that on, lets call it side A of the speaker, it reproduces the high frequencies of left hand side of the audio track on the tweeter but the lower frequencies get send to the other side of the speaker, side B and vice versa. This is why the sound signature doesn't change very much when you walk around, or rotate the speaker.*****
******B & O have released a new firmware for the speaker which adds stereo functionality if you have two of these, you can assign one to act as the left speaker and one that's the right. In order to upgrade the firmware you have to take off one of the speaker covers to access the mini USB socket, this is quite easy. I'm happy to say this works very well, OK you have to have two of these but in stereo they sound amazing.******
Now lets get down to the truth of the matter. If you have product and state that it has a 24 Hour Battery life, and then sell it to people that say to you hey it only last 2 hours when listening to music on 55% battery life you have a problem.
The most hysterical thing is that it will last 24 hours if you keep the volume at 2%, this is not marketing genius it is an insult to the intelligence of the customer.
What is even more insulting is just how adamant B&O are about their 24 hour battery life when I called them up on this to basically send me this lengthy ridiculous test that I had to conduct in order to try and gage if my devices battery had a problem. Well guess what according to the test it did not !
I then got so frustrated I decided to ask Google. Looking through loads of reviews I actually found one that said it all not only that its the truth. Funnily enough it seems buried by all these fantastic reviews quite suspiciously enough.
So I am noting the link to this review as well, and surprise surprise we seem to both be facing the same problem.
So in short this is a very overpriced desk speaker with a poor battery inside of it with a claim that it will last 24 hours if you lsiten to it on super low volume which means the guys who created this msut have suspersonic dog like ears.
Oh but you will look so cool carrying this thing, you might even be mistaken for carrying a man bag/purse of sorts.
Epic fail B&O !
This is exactly why other companies are doing better, and you got it made in China (not a problem), but at least do quality control, you could have made the battery double the size or the Mah of the battery higher, for the £300 asking price its a real shame !
oh and the USB charge out is pointless as the battery is rubbish !
VERY VERY VERY BAD PRODUCT ! DO NOT BUY !
