- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 May 2005Very good introduction to PHP although it doesnt include some of the obvious basics you might want to use.
Note: It covers PHP 5 - and most hosting online is still running PHP 4 (as of June 06) - so you will have to adapt areas of your code quite considerably to run on the older version.
On the whole a good book with good example code - best used in tandom with online resources such as php.net
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2008I bought this to learn from scratch PHP. It's an excellent book and has brillient examples. I had a working web site up and running within a week including security and personalisation options.
If you want a PHP based web site and have just a bit of HTML knowledge then you'll not get a better book then this to help you.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 May 2014Needed this book for uni as was reccomended by tutor, good book, helped a lot with assignments and studying for exams
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 March 2013Great book and an easy read. Allows readers to get started with both php and MySQL programming. The book contains some useful examples showing how to deploy php and MySQL within a data driven environment.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 February 2009This book is very good and comes with a handy cd with a pdf document on for handy references on the computer or if you dont want to lug the book around (it is quite heavy).
While its probably not for the absolute beginner, it helps if you have some understanding of the web (like html and css) and perhaps (but not vital) some php and/or programming experience to get the most out of the book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 July 2013Lots of detail and examples of code. Goes from the basics of PHP and MySQL to more advanced stuff. Thorough coverage.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 January 2009I got this book a couple years ago as I needed to start making my static website more manageable with SQL and PHP. Since then I've slowly been making progress but absolutely no thanks to this useless book. I genuinely have not found anything of help in here and have instead browsed the net to find snippets of code to help me. Everytime I come across another problem I see if there's anything in this book to help out but not once have I found what seem to be simple, basic issues covered.
Having originally learnt html from a book I'd hoped that php would be similar but have been sorely disappointed. This review is my only 1 star review still on Amazon because I normally find something positive but not here. Terrible.

This is the best PHP web development book ever made. Highly recommended for every one wants to get an excellent foundation of web development by PHP/MySQL.
Todd EbertReviewed in the United States on 17 August 20055.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to PHP and MySQL
Before reading this book I had an abundance of programming experience in C/C++ but none with HTML or programming a dynamic website. This book allowed me to quickly realize that there is not much difference between traditional programming and server-side web programming. True, one has to know a little something about html to present input and output, start a session, keep track of session and form variables, and interact with a database, but aside from this the programming is much the same: variables, loops, control statements, functions, and objects. And may be the strength of this book is that Welling's and Thomson's presentation makes this very clear. The presentation is no more difficult than it needs to be to get a web application up and running, whether it is a simple on-line survey, or an industrial strength e-commerce site. I was almost alarmed at how easy it seemed to zip through the chapters, or skim through later chapters finding the right tidbits of helpful information.
I found the chapters on MySQL very good, although I did supplement them with Parts I and II "The Relational Model of Data" from Christopher Date's "Introduction to Database Systems", as I wanted to have a slightly more advanced perspective on SQL database querying and a better understanding of what comprises a database system.
Finally, I should note that a benefit of using MySQL and PHP is that both tools have very good online reference manuals that will answer questions about advanced syntax and use that is omitted from this book (although I must say that this book covers a significant amount of both manuals, and places them well within the context of actual website development).
I couldn't have asked for a better book.

Herve KablaReviewed in France on 31 October 20055.0 out of 5 stars Un petit chef d'oeuvre sur le sujet

Very good book. Thorough when talking about new concepts with easy to understand examples.

... but i've gone through the php crash course (the first part of the book). I have a html/javascript/css background so I could understand and digest most of it. The only thing that turned me off was how it got into describing all exceptions/additions and various obscure details that only served to complicate my mind. You know when you're a beginner? you don't neccisarily know how to filter out the crap that doesn't have any immeadiate utility. Personally I learn from lots of practice and actually writing code over and over. There wasn't enough of that - maybe i need to get deeper into the book. Lynda.com is really great: they give you a bit of information, always followed by you actually writing or tring it out yourself.
