I use 'Scribus' desktop publishing and the fn keys call the correct menu's . Had no problems with Libre Office 7. The 'feel' is different but not unpleasant and I like the back lit effect. As a Linux user things are often difficult but not in this case.
At a year or so in here is my review:
Pros:
- ERGONOMICS! you will not find a more comfortable keyboard than this, super flat to the desk with just the right amount of tilt (it is fixed be warned) and it frees up mouse space so you can sit more naturally and won't have to shuffle your keyboard left and right.
- Typing feel. Keys are on the lighter side to depress which I like. It is nicer than the other cheap chicklet keyboards I own but definitely feels cheap compared to a Surface pro, apple magic, or Logitech MX mini keyboard which are obviously much more premium. It is however very fast to type on and I can happily bash away at my code.
- Key layout. I wish it had a full sized enter key like other UK boards but otherwise it's good. I don't have trouble finding keys once you get used to the slightly weird layout. Having used UK, US, and Finnish keyboards a lot, the UK one is still my fave for programming. The pipe key I still find myself looking down to guide my fingers to though as it's not a dedicated keyboard
- Not a quiet keyboard but it's quiet enough for an office
- Price
- Design. I like how black and minimalist this kb looks when not being used. You basically can't see the letters when the backlight is off.
- Build feels solid with the metal base that sits plush to the desk. Switches or keys don't feel premium but at least they're going strong after a year or so and nothing has worn off.
- Fn key works as expected and function keys (not media keys) are the default key press (I just read in another review you can press fn+W to change backlight mode which isn't advertised!). There's also a fn lock.
- Portability. Light and compact.
Cons:
- Backlighting. The LED's can be seen directly when sitting normally and are distracting. You can turn the back light off but then it's hard to see the letters unless you're in a well lit room.
- Non-standard UK layout. As mentioned above you do get used to it though, just makes switching keyboards harder
- BIGGEST GRIPE WITH THIS KB AND WHY I DROPPED THE REVIEW FROM 5 to 3 stars: It has the same problem other cheap chicklet keyboards have that a single key press will occasionally register twice (although this is MUCH less worse than the wireless ones you see).
- Wired. The wireless on the Logitech MX mini worked well enough that it made me crave a wireless kb with a good battery life but I'd rather it be wired than a poor wireless implementation tbh.
On balance, I still prefer this over the Logitech MX mini which had a lovely feel but felt slower to type on, the concaved keys annoyed me a bit, and it would be very expensive to own two for office and home. I also prefer it to the apple magic keyboard which I LOVE the typing clicks on but unfortunately it has a stupid key layout that isn't easy to fix. So despite it's flaws, I have just ordered my 2nd Perixx 429 for the office until I find something better.
I recently had a small issue with my keyboard and the customer service was excellent - they got it sorted out incredibly quickly.
I don't use this to play games, but for recreational/chill gaming I think it could work. A quick test with some basic modifier keys works as intended. They keys take a little more force to keystroke than most gaming keyboards, but for work/typing it works beautifully.
My keyboard is connected (via an Avocent KVM) to two HP Windows 10 PCs, one pi3 running Stretch and a Mac Mini M1. All work fine; all the usual and weirder characters are available and I didn't have to configure anything.
The Num Lock function that gives you a numeric keypad in the right/middle of the keyboard works fine for Windows and Linux, but not for the Mac. The media function keys work fine for Windows and not for Linux or Mac.
The Keyboard has a great feel, very similar to my MacBook Air M1. It's nicely low profile and sticks very well to the desk surface. Although it is small, the key spacing is the same as a full sized keyboard and there is sufficient space between the keys so that hitting two keys is not a problem.
To me, it feels great, and I am transitioning from 30 odd years of mechanical/Cherry type keyboards, sounds ok too. The back light does go out after a while, but just hitting any key turns it back on again, as does Fn+W which toggles it.
The only slight installation wrinkle for me was that after I had connected it to the Mac there was no sign of life from the keyboard , but a Fn+W turned on the backlight and brought the keyboard to life. The keyboard isn't normally dead with the backlight off, so I guess this was some initialisation thing.
I've just typed this review on it and it feels great, my only very slight dubiosity is that because of the numeric keypad buried in the "regular" keys, some keys have three symbols and some symbols are repeated on more than one key, e.g. +-*, I expect I'll get used to ignoring the "extra" key symbols. If I was a decent touch typist it wouldn't be an issue. The pictures of the keyboard are clear enough.
Great keyboard, great value and solidly made - I'm very happy with it.
****** 6 or 7 weeks later
Wish I'd bought it sooner. My fingers now just float over it like some demented floating thing.
The slight problem I had with the "extra keys" for the imbedded keypad has disappeared.
If I had a use for another wired keyboard I'd buy it again. Just love it.
