I like to use an old IBM PS2 keyboard which has served me well for many years but when I recently changed PC I found the new machine did not have PS2 ports. There were varying reviews for USB-PS2 cable adaptors but none seemed to indicate they would work with such an old keyboard. This PCI card seemed to offer a working solution and it has. It was very easy to install and worked perfectly with Vista, finding it's own drivers. I did not like this installation and reverted to XP and although a driver disc is provided it was not needed, the system finding it's own drivers.

Excellent solution for anyone wanting to use old PS2 keyboard and mouse.

The Best Solution for PS2 Lovers

I've had this card installed for just one day but that's the only time I needed to know that it is performing superbly.

Many motherboards no longer come with PS/2 sockets because the manufacturers seem to have thrown the baby out with the bath water, deciding that PC users prefer to use USB for their mouse and keyboard.

There are two things wrong with that attitude. Firstly they alienate those older generation computer users who are set in their ways and have a particular keyboard or mouse that they want to use with the new technology that they have. I actually like a "proper" keyboard with clunky typewriter-type keys and am dreading the day when the membrane variety take over. It's understandable if there are those out there who have a PS/2 keyboard that they want to cling on to.

I am not that set in my ways and in fact the keyboard and mouse I have are available in USB versions; it wouldn't be difficult to make that change for very little cost if I were only using the one computer but that brings me to my second point.

I use an old-style KVM switch that has VGA and PS/2 inputs and one output. This means that my keyboard and mouse control four computers and I use a hot-hey sequence to switch between them. I press the scroll lock quickly twice in succession upon which I hear a beep then press the cursor up or down to switch to another PC.

Yes, they do make KVM switches now for USB systems but (a) they are expensive compared to the cheap and cheerful KVM that I already have and (b) I would have to change my other computers over to USB. At this point I'll let you into a secret... I see no need whatsoever to make that change. I was taking care of DEC and VAX mainframes in the 80s and I've been using PCs for a very long time now. I work in IT and have had endless driver problems before with USB keyboards and mice, especially at the OS install stage. "But Windows 7 is no longer a problem" I hear you say. True but hard as it may be to believe, not everyone has switched and many companies have other systems that are dependent on older operating systems. USB basic I/O can still be a problem. Furthermore PS/2 is rock solid. You just can't go wrong.

I tried a Belkin adapter that many claimed would work before installing this card and found myself scrabbling around behind my workstation desk to reach up to my trusty old KVM switch and manually press the button on it to change PCs. It was a pain. Whatsmore sometimes the hot-key sequence worked and sometimes it didn't. There was no rhyme or reason to it. I even tried a power supply on the KVM, something that no switch like that should need. It didn't work.

I've now installed this PCI card (well even the most modern motherboards come with at least one legacy PCI slot and what else is one going to run in it?). The card effectively adds transparent PS/2 qualities to the mobo. I've been using the system all day and the hot-key sequence works as well as it ever did.

For anyone who wants to avoid disappointment by throwing away £15 on an adapter cable that may or may not work with their KVM I suggest that you buy this card - provided of course that you do have a spare PCI socket. It does the job.
