Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Based on my limited testing (see below), this adaptor seems to work fine. It looks very similar to several others available on Amazon at somewhat higher prices, so I thought I would bite the bullet and be the first to review it.
It was delivered quite quickly -- much faster than the estimated date quoted when I ordered it, and well packed in an anti-static bag and a padded bag.
Since there is no physical arrangement to hold it in place apart from the SATA plug, mounting is on the flimsy side. But it could easily be fixed to the disk drive with a drop of hot-melt glue, and the same issue will apply to any adaptor of this type.
So, does it work? I bought it to use a 3.5" SATA drive with an old PATA-to-Firewire enclosure, which uses the Oxford Semiconductor OXFW900 chipset. This didn't work reliably, but I'm not surprised.
With a cheapo PATA-to-USB converter it seemed to be fine, giving read/write speeds of 20/27 MB/s. My internal 2.5" HDD gives 33-64/37-64 MB/s, so I reckon that's not bad.
I don't have a PATA motherboard to test it on, unfortunately.
As we all know, IDE drives are no longer manufactured or available generally. So if you want to continue to use an IDE-based motherboard only SATA hard drives and DVD drives are now available, and you need a convertor device to adapt SATA drives to IDE. (Some may also want to use an old IDE drive with a newer SATA-based motherboard, but that is not a common requirement.) This product purports to offer a solution as a SATA-IDE adaptor.
I have discovered though that this product has strange quirks and limitations. In general it will not work at all if connected on the secondary IDE interface when fitted to a SATA DVD drive (whether set as Master or Slave); it will work only if connected as a Slave on the primary IDE interface, which can be difficult due to normal IDE cable limited length, if there is one hard drive and a DVD drive.
In other cases it will work on the primary IDE interface with a stand-alone SATA hard drive, but only if set as a Slave although standing alone on that interface, and only if there is no other drive on the secondary interface; (normally one drive standing alone on an IDE interface must be set as Master). It seems that it will not work on a secondary IDE interface at all under any conditions.
So there are some unbelievable quirks and problems with this device which potential users need to be aware of. This is a great pity, since otherwise this would have been a well-conceived product, as it plugs directly into a SATA drive and needs no additional cables or power connection as some devices do.
The other thing I would suggest is that it needs some plastic insulation on the SATA side of the pcb to prevent it shorting out on the metal of a SATA device plugged into it, and it seems to be a good idea to use adhesive to secure the device on the drive, to prevent it falling out. I would suggest that any user does that when installing a new SATA drive with this device.
I bought three of these to go with three new SATA DVD drives which I needed to put into some older pcs. All three were easy to install and worked fine. What more can I say : very good value for money, arrived promptly, thoroughly recommended. A couple of extra comments a) this does add about 1/2 ich extra depth to the drive so make sure you've got the space for it b) the convertor board is only held by the SATA plug along one side so can be pushed against the back of the drive which could cause damage. Some insulating packing would be a good idea, I used some blobs of silicone rubber and let it set first.
Recently I tried to insall one of these in another pc, also Windows XP like the others but it refused to work and even stopped the pc from recognising another CD drive sharing the same PATA cable. And yes I do know about Master-Slave and yes I did try it on its own and no it's not the DVD drive - no matter what it wouldn't work on this pc. However it does still work fine on two other XP pcs so I've only down-rated it to 3 stars.
I needed to fit a 3.5 inch IDE hard drive to a SATA motherboard. Unfortunately this product, though it is for a 3.5 inch IDE fitting will only allow the fitting of a SATA drive to an IDE motherboard. Neither the signal nor power cables will accommodate any other connection arrangement.
I bought this to be able to replace an IDE DVD writer for the more freely available SATA type. Worked fine, doesnt need a lot of space. Just push fit on SATA drive and on IDE lead in PC. Not the tightest fit but don't think it will work loose with the little vibration of the SATA drive.
Ordered this to convert an old G4 iMac to take an SSD. Plugged in, and worked straight away. I dont have any negatives to say about this as its done exactly what I needed it to
Allowed me to use a second SATA DVD writer. Just plugged it into a spare IDE port and into my DVD Writer, and of course the power connector - worked right away with my Win 7 Ultimate - very good value! Paul G
