Product description

Review

tellingly charts the impact not just of exceptional individuals but of social and economic factors and technological change on theatre. A spread of deftly selected illustrations informatively and handsomely embellishes the text. (TLS)

Format: Paperback
This is a superb book for anyone teaching or studying Drama and Theatre Studies. The writing is accessbile, it includes wonderful source material and, as the title suggests, it is fully illustrated. The section, for example, on the Spanish Golden Age, contains useful information about the politics of the times, illustrations of the theatres and describes production values in a clear and interesting way.Where possible, it includes contemporary accounts of going to the theatre. For such an attractive and complete book, it is also good value. Highly recommended.

This is useful for a general overview of theatre integrated with the history of political and cultural influences upon it, but it misses some key players (for example, Aphra Behn) and certain sections feel quite generalised depending on who has written that particular chapter. The focus on non-English theatre is welcome and useful. The illustrations are interesting, but not generally necessary to an understanding of the text. There are better histories of the theatre, but this is reasonably inexpensive, so represents good value.

As an opera studies student I had an assignment on the influence of earlier genres on 18th century comic opera. This book proved invaluable as a source of information. It was well laid out and well presented.

Excellent book- a shame the back cover had been ripped off of it in transit. However a very useful resource.
