Product Description

Review

an excellent introduction to the history of modern China for the general reader and student alike ... The illustrations are excellent and help to bring the text to life with further colour (in both senses of the word) and detail. I am sure it will prove popular with students and the general public alike. (Tim Chamberlain, LSE Review of Books)

the best place to start for those who wish to get a handle on modern China. (Asian Review of Books)

Format: Hardcover
The history of China is long, dense, and amenable to endless commentary. With China a rising world power, it is necessary to understand a little about its history. Wasserstrom’s book provides a handy book about the history of modern China. By that title, he shaves off a great volume, and commences his modern China with the late Ming Dynasty. That is crucial because it provides the background to the Qing Dynasty – the last one in China. When did China become modern? That is controversial question. The reader will appreciate Wasserstrom’s starting point because it fills the context in which we can better understand the history of China’s nationalism, the Cultural Revolution, the reforms after Mao, leading to the Tiananmen protest and its aftermath.

The Wasserstrom history is lucid and compelling. There is never one history, one view of China. It is a massive dragon with many sides and presents itself differently in different times. What are its intentions and how should its neighbours react to it?

This may be a potted view of the dragon, but each of the essays that comprise this book is well written and analytical. The only thing lacking from this book is an introduction to the various contributors. They are only described on the book jacket as ‘leading specialists’. The illustrations are fascinating and from prints not commonly found.

1.0 out of 5 stars I wish someone had reviewed the book before it is ... 16 Sept. 2016
By Bill Stones - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I wish someone had reviewed the book before it is published. I won't read a book on the history
of China that can't get the basics right, e.g., Yongle emperor is the son of the Hongwu emperor,
(who founded the Ming dynasty), not his grandson, as claimed in the book (at least in the
Kindle version).
