The Oxford Handbook series are intended for dedicated post-qualification doctors. This is a guide for doctors who are involved with the understanding, subject matter, but more important the emotional and shock leading to difficulties of cancer patients. The handbook is concise in it's educational advice on a variety of topics. Junior doctors are educated but often inexperienced in these situations that confront them. This carries through to senior level without the novice factor. This book is a confidence-booster for doctors facing often unpredictable situations in an out-of hours scenario on the learning curve.

If you have cancer, you have cancer. This book is about communication as well as theory. Having spent my career in blood and lymph cancers this was always useful and a source of comfort that you are doing the things evidence-based and appropriate taking into account the importance of the patient as an individual that you are dealing with; unique and not in a text-book. The technical side is thorough but needs a medical background to fully appreciate. The sections on oncogenes, suppressor and enhancing genes plus environmental work on cancer causation are not light-reading. Have a try but look through the contents before purchase. This is a first class reference and educational text written in a style that is understandable given the above caveats.
