I was actually replacing a much loved copy that I had foolishly lent someone. I don't have a Classical education so need the invaluable help to decipher countless historical, journalistic and cultural references.

The hundred-quid Oxford Classical Dictionary, of which The Oxford Companion to Classical Civilization is the boiled-down version, may well be the 'ultimate' reference work on its subject (dust jacket of third edition) but honestly, can anything beat this sleek updating of Sir Paul Harvey's 1937 original which, like its gargantuan younger sister and belying its title, cheekily packed in history, myth, science, geography, religion and thought on the pattern of his original Eng Lit Companion, the great great grandaddy of them all.

NB John Roberts' 2005 Oxford Dictionary of the Classical World was another short-lived abridgement of the OCD. I think the Companion format gets it right, though I prefer the lower profile Cambridge Guides ('companions' in all but name) which have the inestimable reader-friendly advantage of pictures within the text, a precedent which Oxford, despite advances in printing technology, evidently felt a step too far, just as they cling to those depressingly institutional navy blue covers. The book under review (1989 edition) is the Oxford source I could least do without. I checked it yesterday to confirm that, yes, the BBC R4 news team were mispronouncing Palmyra (as Palmira): no change there, then
