This book is an excellent commentary and companion to the bible.
It is cut from a very broad cloth, and is more open ended than one might have
expected. It admits some areas of uncertainty and accepts some alternative views.
It is of extreme value in offering interpretation in areas where the meaning is uncertain
or in explaining confusing language.
It is strongly recommended to anyone wishing to study the Bible for whatever reason

This is an excellent basic commentary covering the Old Testament, New Testaments and all of the Deuterocanonical books included in the complete NRSV. It also has sections on post biblical Jewish literature and early Christian writings such as the Didache. Altogether a very worthwhile purchase, and a considerable help in sermon preparation. One word of warning, weighing in at over 5lb 5oz, it is rather heavy to carry around!

This was brought for the bible study group. It is very informative and well written and gives all the historical context behind the biblical passages. My only criticism would be that the print is quite small, but otherwise it is a good reference book which would be suitable for a wide readership,.

Having completed a lay preachers course in the Christian Church I have been looking for a one volume commentary. Have now found it!
The Oxford Bible Commentary is a concise (but rather heavy), written by well informed experts commentary. It gives a great verse-by-verse discuss of the whole Bible.

A great starting point fot study and sermon preparation.

I use the Oxford Bible Commentary all the time in my work (congregation) and also in my personal life just to get a better grip on what's going on in the Bible. It's compact, informative and useful. If I needed to pick just one commentary to have around, this would be it.

I don't appreciate this commentary very much. I wonder if it is written by atheists. Prefer Matthew Henry

Viewpoints of several scholars are presented so that the student can interpret what is read for himself. Obscure Biblical passages can more readily be understood. This is certainly a good companion.
