This audiobook CD is performed by Maureen Lipman ... her warm and witty character voices add a hilarious dimension to the tale. Your children will enjoy listening to it over and over ... until they know it by heart.
The story is about a young barn owl called Plop, who is afraid of the dark. The plot is divided into seven little stories. Each one is a satisfying tale in which Plop learns something new about the dark each night: dark is exciting, dark is kind, dark is fun, dark is necessary, dark is fascinating, dark is wonderful ... and dark is beautiful. Plop isn't convinced immediately, but by the seventh night he's looking at the dark through new eyes!
If you know a little someone who is afraid of the dark, then this CD will cure them in one week ... guaranteed! But this wonderful story does so much more: it shows a simple paradox of life: how different people can see the same thing in many different ways - none of them wrong; all of the right!

I was disappointed to receive this product and discover it was only a CD. I was expecting a paper version of the book and the accompanying CD. Similar products I have bought from amazon with the same description included both. Given the price I paid, I was expecting both.
The story itself is ok but some of the sound effects can be a bit frightening for young children ( the story opens with a clock chiming rather spookily and blood curdling shrieks). If the story is to reassure children who are scared of the dark, then this doesnt get off to a good start. My three year old declared " I dont like this" soon after hearing the start as described.
all in all disappointing.

Probably one of the best stories ever written. Plop is a baby owl who is afraid of the dark and his parents are desperate to make him accept his position in life as an owl and fly at night. He is sent out to meet a variety of characters: a boy scout, a little girl and an old lady among others, all of who provide a different view on the darkness. Nevertheless, it is only when Plop meets a night-prowling cat that he truly comes to understand his destiny. A delightful story that treats animals as animals (okay, so they talk; but the animals behave like animals) and which is told in a simple but moving way. I have always loved this book and still read it on a regular basis, over 30 years since I first met it...

When I was young I read lots of books, and some stayed with me more than others. More than just a memory, Plop and his adventures actually lodged themselves in my brain and never left. I was petrified of the dark as a youngster, and this book went a long way to helping me realise I wasn't going to perish each time the lights went out. It's a simple, atmospheric story with great characterisation and the occasional wry remark that any adult reading to a child will appreciate. I've only go about 3 books left from when I was very young, and this is the one I'll rescue if the house is going up in flames.

I have been looking for the Maureen Lipman version of audio book and found this on Amazon. I found it, but when I downloaded it (using a free trial to Audible, which is now used and can't be used again) I found that the download is the Bill Oddie version. Thanks Amazon, you must be pleased. If I was sold something in a shop that I didn't ask for you would have to sort it out but you won't. Be warned this is not the version by Maureen Lipman, but you might think it is, check and double check before you commit yourself.

First the story: I have loved this book ever since I was given it as a child. The adventures of the night bird, Plop, who is afraid of the dark always fascinated me. It's a great story for pointing out all the wonderful qualities of nighttime & darkness to a child who may be nervous about such things. It also shows them you can grow to be brave and conquer your fears. Of course it is also just an wonderful tale with beautiful illustrations.
Now for the cd: it's a great addition, especially as it has not been shortened. As we had already purchased (several copies!) of the book (The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark) for our children we can now leave them to listen quietly to the story alone, while they look through the book. Although, I must admit to prefering to either read the story to them myself at bedtime, or sit with them and listen too. Not sure who really enjoys it more!
