So many times throughout this book I wanted to reach into the pages and just hug the young Marleyna. She witnessed some awful events and endured such difficult and unstable living conditions she was forced to grow up fast. Yet despite all the adults that let her down and the nasty characters that pass through her life during these years she shows such strength and spirit, and never gives up hope that something better will come. I've just download the next book, City Of Angels, and can't wait to get started on it.

Loved it. It really gave me an insight to life in the 1970s in Las Vegas. Being born in that period myself, but in a different country, I still saw parallels in my own life and could relate to dealing with alcoholic adults and feeling neglected. It brought about a lot of the feelings I felt but did not utter. Reading those feelings so well expressed and the author mentioning that she thought that parents were there to protect you and not abuse you, rang so true. This book clearly portrays a parentified child and her struggle for survival against all odds. I also found the portrayal of the poor and the well off in the novel very realistic. It showed that not only the poor are struggling, but so are the well off, but they are better able to hide behind a facade. The novel is bound to touch you as you clearly feel the depth of emotions of Marlayna at every stage of her growing to become a woman.

Heart wrenching story of child neglect and alcoholism. Makes you realise how good you had it growing up.
You'll be with Marlayna every step of the way rooting for her at every challenge and unable to put the book down until you know she is safe.
Marlayna is a true inspiration!

This is a beautifully written account of a horrific childhood due to her parents alcoholism. It made me wonder about the millions of children over the world suffering from total parental neglect & lack of basic concern. I feel this book has opened my eyes to see potential neglect within my own community & most importantly it has motivated me to help in any way I can. It also says a lot about the human spirit, our ability to survive & I believe from the epilogue, even thrive despite being so close to extinction on many occasions. The author is clearly highly gifted & talented in many ways & I am grateful she chose to share her story.

I have the impression from reading the sequels that this book was rewritten by the author several times and it shows in the fabulous quality of the writing and pace of the book. It is an excellent read so much so that I bought and devoured her next two books as I knew they would be worth reading. They were. Obviously, commenting on the awfulness of her upbringing is pointless but her parents did give her something: her intelligence and talent.

What a heartbreaking and uplifting writing, just to survive is one thing but to come out on top is another.
Life is hard to understand sometimes but this book has made me realize that maybe I am extremely lucky.

Where alcohol takes over and a child is left neglected and has to struggle with everyday living, and thankfully help from some good people. I enjoyed this book very much, my heart went out to Marlayna.
