Product description

Product Description

From the anthemic delta slide and piano chimes of Magpies, through the stripped back folk-with-intent of Hold Out Your Hand, to the upbeat goose-bumping Americana of Riding Trains (where the lyric dodges hackneyed formulas by name-checking the Circle Line over the Union Pacific Railroad), Outsider is an album of rolling diversity but is deftly anchored by Forrester's warm, openhearted vocals, his confident yet un-showy musicianship and his raggle-taggle cast of ace supporting players. It's a contemporary take on folk and roots, but is steeped in the great traditions; it's a subjective and meditative gaze at the mid-life psyche, yet its themes are universal; and it's a testament to patience, exploration and determination, but still has time for humour and humanity in its hasty 46 minute running time.

Many of the biggest selling records of last year were by British songwriters and if there is any justice this artist will enjoy similar success this year. This is a very impressive collection of largely acoustic, hook-laden, folk-tinged songs with melodic but distinctive vocals. It opens with the angst of the hard-hitting title track ‘Outsider’ which it soon becomes evident is not typical of the album as a whole. It is followed by my favourite track ‘Magpies’ with its poetic heartfelt lyrics and hypnotic chorus. Next up is the upbeat folk of ‘Hold Out Your Hand’ and the mellow but wonderfully dark ballad ‘W9’. After this comes the accordion-led folk-pop of ‘Riding Trains’ and Sixteen Hours’ which has slightly more of an Americana vibe. This is followed by the haunting, beautiful ‘Into Another Life’, the more reflective ‘Looking For Rain’ and another moving tale ‘Princes Street’. Another change of style awaits with the intense dark folk track ‘Lily’s Bones’ before the sublime ballad ‘The Wrong Side of the River’ closes the album in some style.

This is an amazing album. Beautiful songs created by a brilliant singer-songwriter.
I only stumbled upon this album whist checking up to see if the Outcast Band had a new album coming out. I didn't even realise that any of the band members had released any solo material.
Every song is fantastic.
