About the Author

Michelle Mankin is the Amazon bestselling author of the Black Cat Records series of novels. Romance with subtext. Reimagining classic stories with sexy rock stars and thought provoking issues. Love Evolution, Love Revolution, and Love Resolution are a BRUTAL STRENGTH centered trilogy, combining the plot underpinnings of Shakespeare with the drama, excitement, and indisputable sexiness of the rock 'n roll industry. Things take a bit of an edgier, once upon a time turn with the TEMPEST series. These pierced, tatted, and troubled Seattle rockers are young and on the cusp of making it big, but with serious obstacles to overcome that may prevent them from ever getting there. Rock stars, myths, and legends collide with paranormal romance in a totally mesmerizing way in the MAGIC series. Catch the perfect wave with irresistible surfers in the ROCK STARS, SURF AND SECOND CHANCES series. When Michelle is not prowling the streets of her Texas town listening to her rock music much too loud, she is putting her daydreams down on paper or traveling the world with her family and friends, sometimes for real, and sometimes just for pretend as she takes the children to school and back. •••I listened to the Audible Audio Edition of this book•••

I have loved Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross ’s performances since the first time I heard them work together! They play very well of each other. This is just as good as every other first in a series I have heard by them! Each character is unique and well performed. I hope they continue on with this series as it was a really fun listen. They bring a depth of emotion to every performance that I dont think I would find by just reading the book. I can't imagine it voiced by anyone else. More please :)

This series must be listened to (or read) in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to listen to the next one!

Simone has never gotten over her first and only love Link Savage. He hurt her worse than she ever thought possible. Choosing fame and fortune over their relationship all because she felt the need to do the right thing. If only things had been different. Now he is back with a proposition and all she wants it to be left alone... Or does she? Is what she felt for him truly buried in the past? Does she dare give him another chance? Or should she just keep to her solitary existence? Is love worth the risk?

Lincoln never loved anyone except Ash until he met Mona. She was unlike anyone he had ever known. Growing up with an abusive father who hated him and told him how worthless he was didn't help his self esteem any. At least he'd had his Aunt and Uncle ... And Ash. Ash was the brother he never had as well as his best friend. Mona was a breath of fresh air and he wanted to make her his from the moment he heard her singing on the beach.

Outside is my first Michelle Mankin book and I'm glad it was one about rockstars (who doesn't love a good rocker story?) and surfers (because I love surfing). Although the book mentions surfing, it's more about second chance love and difficult decisions, than actual surfing.

I'm going to keep this as spoiler free as possible: Simone aka Mona, is the girl who was left behind (well sort of, it's much more complicated than that). She still lives in the same town whilst Linc went off and became successful and rich with his band Dirt Dogs. When Linc suddenly arrives home after many years, Mona is very hesitant to even talk to him and is still deeply hurt by the past. They both hold on to a fair amount of hurt, each blaming the other.

The plot fills in the gaps of the past via flashbacks. I was desperate to know what happened all those years ago. There are many misunderstandings which haunt them along the way. I did find it a little difficult to warm to them at first, but once the story got going, I softened towards them and ended up feeling genuine empathy for them (apart from the times where I wanted to smack some sense into them).

Doubt and insecurity play a huge part in the conflict of the book, as does outside influences. I loved the sections where they discussed music and surfing. I also really appreciated the message of the story.

I kept trying to work out the many possible explanations for the title and felt as if the real reason worked well with the characters and the story. I'd like to have had a little more about the secondary characters (a certain bandmate in particular) but perhaps this will be in a different book.

I received a review copy.

Outside is the first book I have read by Michelle Mankin I was gifted a copy of the book to read for Gemma Reads Too Much.

Ok so I’ve just finished Outside and honestly my first thought was

15 YEARS YOU F*CKING TOSSER!!!!!

Followed by shortly by

15 YEARS YOU STUPID COW!!!!

This book is ultimately a very sweet second chance love story but honestly I wanted to knock the lead characters heads together!!!

This book starts in present day then flashes back to 15 years previous and then back to present day.

Linc comes across as incredibly sweet but he does have some serious a-hole moments and I’m not sure if I want to hug him or slap him!!!

Mona (Simone) is a doormat, she allows everyone in her life to railroad her. Now I get that its hinted at her being a naturally submissive person but I just really wanted her to stand up for herself!!!

This is a beautiful love story and the idea that even 15 years later they still love each other is lovely.

BUT!!!! What on earth made them wait 15years; I mean that’s a very long time!!!

I felt intensely sad for Mona, she really never moved on from Linc whereas he’s been living the sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle.

There is a lot of underlying plot that is mentioned i/e Patch and Karen, Ash & Linc, Mona’s parents’ divorce, Mona’s money problems. I really felt like I was missing something and twice I checked that this was a standalone rather than a book in the middle of a series.

The sex in this book is intense and passionate but Linc, dude, ever heard of foreplay???

I spent the whole of this book torn between thinking the story was lovely and thinking it was all 15years too late!!!

In the end I’ve come to the conclusion that this is a cute beachy, romance.

Outside gets 3 stars from me.
