It's Christmas Day and the Brockman family have decided to escape the festivities and head for the sun, but fate seems determined to intervene. Grandad has been taken ill and is languishing in the hospital from hell. Karen has toothache so her special yuletide treat is a trip to an emergency dentist. Ben is intent on getting into the Guinness Book of Records, preferably with a record involving knives, and their ditsy friend Jane is going to be looking after the house, with her ex-convict boyfriend. What can possibly go wrong?

Outnumbered Series 1-3 was one of the best bits of comedy of all time, and I thought that a comedy masterpeice had been born. Then came Series 4, which was dissapointing, and then came the Christmas Special 2011.
Overall I must say this Christmas Special was better than Series 4 was, and if wasn't for the length I would give the episode 4 stars. Before I talk about the actual content of the episode I just want to highlight something. £6 for a 40 minute episode, even if its funny - surely that is wrong. A short christmas special of a comedy should be sold alongside the closest series (with the boxset of the fourth series) and not on its own. I mean it's just stupid and that's one of the main reasons i'm put off buying it... one short episode is worth £3 at the most!
Now I've had that moan i'll go on to the actual content of the episode itself, which to be honest shows a glimmer of hope for the shows future. The plan for the Brockman's to go away for christmas is comedy genius and absolutly brilliant comedy writing - well done to the writers. Events such as Karen's toothace, Ben's obsession with knifes and Jake's hangover make this episode a good laugh - although when comparing to say Series 2 it can not stand up for the simple reason I believe that the children are getting to old to supply the comedy with the laughs that they could go before. There still telling the jokes well but the simple fact that they are older makes the whole thing seem more un-real.
On the other hand the adults in the programme are still the same, and while Hugh Dennis has got his normal mundane un-funny tone, Claire Skinner (who plays Sue) on the other hand is still providing laugh to laugh as she tries to deal with family life. This show works because its realistic and people can both laugh at it and compare it to their modern life.
Overall if I was just rating the episode I would say 4 stars because without much argument it is very good (it would not get 5 because I think Hugh Dennis is at his worse here) however the item is only worth 3 stars because of the length and quality for price of the DVD. Buy if your a completist, otherwise just wait for a box set off all the series and buy it when it's in there.
