This is the ultimate manual for living better and longer.
For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of ageing that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late, prolonging lifespan at the expense of quality of life. Dr Peter Attia, the world's top longevity expert who is featured on Chris Hemsworth's National Geographic documentary LIMITLESS, believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalised, proactive strategy for longevity.
This isn't 'biohacking,' it's science: a well-founded strategic approach to extending lifespan while improving our physical, cognitive and emotional health, making each decade better than the one before. With Outlive's practical advice and roadmap, you can plot a different path for your life, one that lets you outlive your genes to make each decade better than the one before.

There is some enlightening (and depressing) contented on exercise and muscle loss with age. How hard it can be to recover it and sometimes it felt impossible. But if you can manage it then he explains clearly, and in scientific detail the benefits. But although he outlines a program for cardio (3 hours per week plus semi-sprint for 4 mins in 4 to 6 sets) his strength training was lacking in similar information. To be fair he says it is not an exercise book, but I would have liked a little guide to tweak my own exercise. The headline is do much more now, because it will still drop off with age anyway.
Nutrition is again detailed, and you could use it to decide how you will eat. No programs but comments on existing ones.
Emotional health falls waaay short in my opinion. Another reviewer commented on the access to expensive centres and the benefit the author got from confronting trauma. But I felt the book would have benefited from more middle of the road guidance and where to get support. For instance, loneliness is a big issue for many and this might have been the place to flag it.
There was a lot of science, and it held up better than most influencers advice. If you wanted to measure stuff like VO2 max or the various blood works mentioned, I expect this could be expensive.
The book ended suddenly with about fifteen percent to go. I expected programs or further links to exercise and diet. But the remainder was index, citations and footnotes.
Overall, it was interesting and I will try to interpret he diet and exercise into my own work. The mental health - not so much.
I've been listening to Peter Attia's podcast for a very long time now and although I sometimes find the technicality of the subjects discussed a bit too much, the only podcast I found comparable is Andrew D. Huberman's.
To me, the book does really good job of covering all aspects of how to be healthy, especially the philosophy around medicine 3.0 where knowing your risks and taking precautions are crucial.
Things like sleep, stability and mental/emotional health are heavily emphasized with personal experiences from the author. The one regarding sleep and how he has changed his mind on it especially resonated with me.
The story regarding his friend's mother being injured and then slowly fading away was a very stark realization to me that accidents or even an event of infectious disease can really reduce or limit our capacity to a level where there is no going back for us.
I also could not put the book down once he started telling the story of his mental health struggles. I've listened to him many hours and I do not remember once he is mentioning this, nor I would have thought that he could have gone through such experiences. I really appreciate his frankness and openness on this.
There are not a huge amount of practical advice and detailed directions on nutrition and exercise, but he outlines the foundations of these well. I was not really looking forward to set of exercise or recipes, nor a list of supplements when I started reading this book. If you have that kind of expectation, then you might be disappointed a bit. Personally, I like the level of details and general approach of why and how we should do certain things for a healthier and longer life.
I've left with good lessons and a better awareness about well being and longevity from reading this book.
