Oh, dear. A fairly typical poor relative at the mercy of her cruel guardians type of plot, with a handsome but unsuitable hero on the side, and no harm in that at all.
However, I've been irritated by use of the wrong words twice (indulgent instead of the very different self-indulgent)and another I can't recall without going through the pages again) but finally gave up when the heroine and her fiance did the foxtrot at a ball in 1860 or 1861 (book set just before the American Civil War started) The foxtrot didn't come into being as a dance until the 1920/30s
